By-laws can have fines of up to $10,000.00 per day and these fines will be applied to your property taxes

County lists -- IMPROVE COMMUNICATION

Dear Editor Bill 68 affects you. We haven't heard much about Bill 68, but it's now in Committee and headed to 3rd and final reading – meaning government will be passing this Bill if we don't do something to get them to stop it. Remember when people were not going to get their day in court if they received a parking ticket, or if they violated any municipal by-law – it's back in this Bill. Some of these by-laws can have fines of up to $10,000.00 per day and these fines will be applied to your property taxes if you don't go in and pay them a.s.a.p. What an easy way for municipalities to take your land for non-payment of property taxes. Think about it.
So you let your child play road hockey and the municipality passes a by-law that no one can play road hockey. You receive, in the mail, a notice that you are being fined for non-compliance of the municipal by-law. You go to the municipality and say you were unaware of the by-law and they tell you sorry about your luck – you still have to pay. You live on a very quiet street, little or no traffic and these are just kids, so you want to challenge this fine (and the by-law) in court. Again sorry about your luck – you can't because this is in Bill 68 – Administrative Penalties. Next you decide you are not going to pay the fine because you feel this just isn't right. Again sorry about your luck – they will just add it to your property taxes and if you don't pay you may lose your home. They are also, in Bill 68, reducing the grace period for non-payment of property taxes from 3 years down to 2 years with a 30 day instead of a 60 day notice. This is for any by-law that you are not in compliance with, be that by-law lawful or not, therefore if you don't pay you can possibly lose your land and your home . If you are a Liberal, an NDP or a PC everyone in this province should be shouting from the roof-tops telling their MPPs – NO – we are not going to accept this from you – Kill Bill 68. That goes for those who live in Toronto because Bill 68 amends the City of Toronto Act as well. It's time for everyone to stop the lunacy and bring some accountability back to Queen's Park!
