Day of Heroes recalls Hero Witold Pilecki
International Day of the Heroes of the Fight Against Totalitarianism
Warsaw (PMN)—The Union for Europe of the Nations (UEN) of the European Parliament not only established May 25 as the International Day of the Heroes of the Fight Against Totalitarianism, but took special pains to honor Witold Pilecki while doing so.
May 25 was chosen because it is the anniversary day of the execution of a death sentence on the Auschwitz hero, Witold Pilecki. He was executed on May 25, 1948.
The Parliament considered the 2006 Resolution 2006 of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly on the need for international condemnation of crimes of totalitarian communist regimes. It declared that the murders committed and enslavement caused under the acts of aggression perpetrated by Fascism and Stalinism qualify to be considered war crimes and crimes against humanity.
