imageThe latest members of the Canada Free Press (CFP) family happen to be its most colourful. Plain spoken, practical, Dub and Deb are salt-of-the-earth American patriots trying to share reader’s ideas about how to “Ride Out the Recession”. When Doug, nicknamed “Dub” by his Mother-in-law, first called CFP, he wanted to make `Ridin’ Out the Recession’ a best of its kind feature on the internet. He and wife, Deb, are well on their way to doing just that. Talking on the telephone to Doug, I thought he was Texan. He promptly informed me he is Floridan and though he was lived in the USA most of his life, was born in France to boot...(Doug claimed Southern France actually…Bon Jour Ya’ll!).

Since then, Doug has confessed he was actually born and raised in Florida. You gotta watch him! Doug speaks in what sounds to me, a Texan drawl. He would be quick to point out that my Canadian accent is hopelessly sprinkled with “all those he “Ehs?” Being on the learning curve with Dub and Deb is giving us some good belly laughs. His voice may come over the line as a Texan drawl, but there is no second guessing about where else he is coming from. As fancy as his usually dust covered pickup truck, Doug says what he means and means what he says. Give Dub the real “True Grit” because as far as he’s concerned there’s only one John Wayne. While there’s always some politics going on all over the CFP cover, in Florida, Dub and Deb have the coffee pot percolating, gathering tips from readers about how to remain free, independent and self sufficient. In Saint Patrick-like fashion, he promised to rid his land of all coral snakes and rattlers if CFP wants to come down for a visit. They’ll even put aside target practice while entertaining us, he says. There’s a little bit of the Beverly Hillbillies in the Dub & Deb style, but so far they stick to chicken and hamburger dishes without ever throwing a possum into the pot. “Hunker down”, “stick together”, “back to the basics” is the theme of their “Coverin’ the bases.” Dub treats negativity the same as the occasional alligators he sometimes spots in one of his ponds. “Out!” he shouts at negativity with the same volume he he uses to shout at the gators. “Times is tough, but we’ll get by just as our older generations survived the Dirty 30s,” he says. “Proud to be American” shouts all over Doug & Deb, and you don’t have to see Old Glory flying from their flagpole to know how they feel about their country. If these Floridans had their way, all “younguns” would be taught how much there is to be proud about in America’s glorious historical past. For adults, they stick to a rule of thumb governed by “Get out of debt, get out of town (and into the country) learn how to be self reliant and safe. “Put the priority that should always have been first back to first: family,” is the Dub & Deb mantra. “Depending on government is a dead-end street. Depending on each other will see us through bad times and good.” CFP is blessed to be able to call Dub & Deb “family”.
