"Consternation in Israel over the EU's malicious decision to boycott individuals or institutions situated over the 'Green Line' between Israel and the disputed territories. This would presumably include boycotting, for example, the Hebrew University which is just over that line or, even more grotesquely, Jewish residents in Jerusalem's Old City—where ancient Jewish settlement far predated the arrival of a single Arab, dating as it does since King David who built it as the capital of the kingdom of the Jewish people. News of the EU's act of existential spite against Israel broke on the fast of Tisha b'Av, when Jews mourn the destruction of the Temple (you know, that Temple, the one that stood in Jerusalem all those centuries ago before any Arabs existed, let alone any Green Line) along with the seemingly never-ending list down through the ages of all those prosecuting their uniquely murderous and baseless hatred of the Jewish people.
Some coincidence. To that list of infamy, the EU can now add its name. For shame." (Melanie Phillips, Daily Mail, July 17th 2013)An EU statement about the directive said it is ““in conformity with the EU’s longstanding position that Israeli settlements are illegal under international law and with the non-recognition by the EU of Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied territories, irrespective of their legal status under domestic Israeli law,” The EU, which so often seeks to be conciliatory in the matters of disputed borders such as with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, takes a different and very hostile tone with Israel. Far from promoting any kind of peace the statement is pro-Palestinian and makes future negotiations about anything problematical, since it will constantly insert the sticking point that certain territories are not Israeli when clearly from a functional perspective alone, they are. Catherine Ashton, EU Foreign Secretary wrote back in March “The EU and its members states have a clear position on settlement activities in the occupied territories. Closely linked to this is the question of products imported into the EU originating beyond Israel’s pre-1967 borders and their correct labeling on the EU market.” This is nothing more than the EU trying to bully Israel into the direction they want it to go. Insiders in the union are unhappy with negotiations to give back land and with Israel’s insistence on building housing there. So they have inserted themselves into the matter, holding the Israeli’s accountable for making everything happen. Israeli ministers have differing perspectives! Ayelet Shaked, (Jewish Home), “ (Israel) will not take directives from Europe.” Nachman Shai (Labor) “(misguided) forces in our government (are) turning the international community against Israel through their settlement policies, costing us our independence. The world is putting us under siege.” This is like comparing Joshua and Caleb to the 10 spies. Shaked understands that principle is paramount whereas Shai has the classic co-dependent lefty position that the policy needs to be constantly re-adjusted to satisfy the most hostile minority. At the same time as the EU move John Kerry, no doubt in co-ordination with Ashton, said in a letter to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that Israel’s pre-1967 borders will be the basis of renewed peace talks between Palestine and Israel. This has brought Abbas back to the negotiating table. Kerry, doing Obama’s bidding and following up on the President’s previous call for pre-1967 borders, nevertheless appears to be caught up in the same hypocrisy as the Israeli Labor minister. All Palestine has to do is threaten to walk out and the Americans and the EU demand or impose more changes from Israel. This is not negotiating, it is political theatre. There is no intent from the Arab world to settle the situation and there is contempt from the lefties of the world for Israel’s existence. Only the considerable financial support of liberal Jews to the Democratic party keeps that half of American politics from flushing Israel down the toilet once and for all.
