Bottom line. McCallum accepted an impossibly stupid mission. He got caught. And Trudeau and his government disavowed all knowledge of his involvement.

Ex-Ambassador McCallum Falls on His Sword to Save TrudeauJohn McCallum did not resign, he was fired by Trudeau for being caught doing Trudeau’s bidding.

For Trudeau and the Liberals, it is all about winning this upcoming election and turning Asian-Ontario swing ridings to the Liberals and retaining existing Asian-dominated Liberal ridings.

That is why McCallum gave a 40-minute speech to only local Chinese-speaking newspapers in the Asian-dominated town of Markham about why McCallum and the Trudeau Liberals thought Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei CFO had a strong legal case against America’s extradition request for her to be removed to the U.S.

.

The U.S. alleged that Huawei, through one of its subsidiaries in Iran, defrauded international banks and used these banks to launder funds in and out of Iran in clear violation of American sanctions against Iran.

No English-speaking press was allowed at this 40-minute briefing in which McCallum meticulously and articulately laid out the case to the Asian reporters and by extension to the Asian voters in the Markham ridings and to the Communist Chinese government.

When this very undiplomatic speech was leaked, McCallum was forced to apologize for “misspeaking”.

This was no misspeak. McCallum is not smart enough to have composed this pro Huawei, pro Communist China speech without help from the sharp Liberal lawyers in the Prime Minister’s Office and without the knowledge and consent of Trudeau.

You see the slippery Trudeau and the Liberals were caught doing what they always do. Speaking out of two sides of their mouths to two different audiences in two different languages. Usually Trudeau says something in English to English Canada and something different on the same topic to French Quebec.

McCallum and Trudeau thought they could pull that same stunt on the Huawei case. They thought they could say in English to English Canada and to the U.S, that the Huawei matter was strictly legal and Canada was simply following the rule of law and respecting its treaty obligations with the U.S. and there would be no political interference in the adjudication of the Meng Wanzhou
extradiction case.

But McCallum and Trudeau were too clever for their own good. They wanted to send a contrary message to the Asian voters in Markham through the Chinese only newspapers which had direct ties to Communist China, that “wink, wink, Canadian Asian voters,  the Trudeau Liberals do not like Trump. We think Trump screwed up this case by his political comments. And we hope Wanzhou wins her case and we can then resolve our Sino-Canadian differences. And you, Communist Chinese government, once the U.S. loses in our Canadian court,  can release our Canadian citizens and we can continue to do business together as an alternative to the ugly Americans to the south.”

But McCallum and Trudeau did not count on McCallum’s speech being leaked- by journalists who did not share the same pro Liberal views as the mainstream Liberal-friendly CBC and Toronto Star.

They also did not count on the political firestorm that was unleashed by McCallum’s apparently very pro Communist Chinese comments which ran contrary to Canada’s national interests and particularly its relationship with its major ally and trading partner to the south.

Initially, Trudeau came to the defense of the beleaguered McCallum. But when McCallum doubled down and once again expressed the Liberals’ view that it would be good for Canada if the U.S. withdrew its extradition request, it was political game over for the Liberal political veteran.

Bottom line.  McCallum accepted an impossibly stupid mission. He got caught. And Trudeau and his government disavowed all knowledge of his involvement.
