Fires, Humanitarianism and Exceptionalism

Fires, Humanitarianism and Exceptionalism, Getty Fire, VA Los Angeles, Veterans

Fellow Veterans and Friends of Veterans:

Yesterday at 3:22 AM, I received an official notice for mandatory evacuation in my area of residence regarding the rapid expansion of the “Getty Fire.”

Fortunately, it was lifted for our area as the fire moved westward into Pacific Palisades and not south where I live.

Veterans Affairs: Most sluggard, incompetent, dysfunctional, irresponsible, feckless and feeble agency imaginable

A big and grateful salute to all the first responders from the many fire and police departments and supportive services who did a professional and superb job of containing yesterday’s fire around the 10,000 homes and structures in these affluent and influential areas.

It’s called humanitarianism!

It’s also called American exceptionalism!

Yesterday clearly showed how Americans can successfully accomplish virtually anything for anyone when called upon.

Except, of course, ending Veteran homelessness in our nation’s capital for impoverished homeless Veterans.

Yesterday’s rapid response by first responders to a major fire was only outpaced by the local VA police’s rapid response to make false arrests on U.S. Military Veterans for displaying the American Flag outside the VA, while crime and corruption runs rampant and ignored inside the VA.

Other than that swift movement to arrest and prosecute the innocent, the VA – which is the second largest bureaucracy in federal government -- is the most sluggard, incompetent, dysfunctional, irresponsible, feckless and feeble agency imaginable when it comes to providing humanitarian shelter for homeless Veterans.

Biggest land-fraud scandal in American history and the inhumane treatment of disabled and homeless Veterans

Yesterday, quicker-than-Jack-could-jump-over-a-candlestick, the local governments provided immediate Evacuation Centers for more than 10,000 residents and their  pets who were forced to evacuate their luxurious homes in some of the most wealthiest ZIP Codes in the nation.

More than a thousand first responders contained 618 acres as their Command Post was set up at the UCLA baseball stadium parking lot on the – you guessed it – 388-acre compound of the Los Angeles VA.

And to no surprise, the “Media Staging Area” was also set up at the illegal UCLA stadium.

This is the same media that refuses to report on the biggest land-fraud scandal in American history and the inhumane treatment of disabled and homeless Veterans.

If only the VA could move as quickly and effectively to protect its 388 acres from unwanted forces as the firefighters worked to contain yesterday's unwanted force and while the media aggressively reported it, this too would be hailed as a noble act of humanitarianism executed with American exceptionalism.

And, it’s no surprise that the first responders Command Post and Media Staging Area at the Los Angeles VA still has the normal traffic for Veteran patients blocked or detoured, etc., instead of being set up on the huge (illegal) Brentwood Village public parking lot on VA property or the 12-acre City of L.A.’s (illegal) public dog park and parking lot, which are actually closer and more convenient to challenge the expanding fire-threatened areas.

Why is this massive takeover of VA property for non-Veteran use allowed, while homeless Veterans continue to be ignored and abandoned?

Why is this massive takeover of VA property for non-Veteran use allowed, while homeless Veterans continue to be ignored and abandoned?

Let there be no misunderstanding; if the local governments could set up immediate shelter for more than 10,000 residents including their  pets, why can’t they do the same for our disabled and homeless Veterans?

Here’s a list for yesterday’s immediate Evacuation Centers:

  • Westwood Recreation Center **
  • Palisades Recreation Center **
  • Van Nuys / Sherman Oaks Recreation Center
  • Stoner Recreation Center
  • Cheviot Hills Recreation Center
  • For Animals:
    • West Valley Animal Shelter
    • West LA Animal Shelter
    • Large Animals: Hansen Dam Recreation Area
** At 4:00 PM PDT Monday, the Palisades and Westwood Centers transitioned into Shelters, with overnight sleeping arrangements and food.

It was simply remarkable how all this was done immediately and so efficiently.

And yesterday in front of lap-dog reporters, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti was boasting about this rapid and safe evacuation of thousands-upon-thousands of residents and their pets with immediate and protected shelter.

While thousands-upon-thousands of Veterans live homeless and hungry outside on the sidewalks and back-allies of Los Angeles instead of inside at the National Veterans Home, the City of L.A. controls 12 acres of Veterans’ VA land “rent free” for a public dog park.

It’s called non-discriminatory humanitarianism...It’s also called American exceptionalism!

Equally as reprehensible, the City of L.A. is spending $5 million for a flimsy and insufficient trailer park on VA property to temporarily shelter 100 Veterans.  It was supposed to be completed early this year and now it won’t be completed until next year.

There are an estimated 5,000 homeless Veterans in Los Angeles.

What do you think would have  happened yesterday if they only provided shelter for 200 instead of 10,000 and it took more than a year to accomplish it?

And let’s not forget another major failure of Mayor Garcetti.

In 2014 at a big elitist lunch-gathering at a ritzy hotel in upscale Century City, Mayor Garcetti promised then First Lady Michelle Obama that he would end Veteran homelessness in Los Angeles by the end of 2015.

We’re nearing the end of 2019 and Los Angeles is still our nation’s capital for homeless Veterans.

It’s time to light a fire under every politician and VA bureaucrat and demand the same equal and efficient teamwork to immediately shelter thousands-upon-thousands of impoverished homeless Veterans just as they did yesterday to shelter thousands-upon-thousands of wealthy homeowners.

It’s called non-discriminatory humanitarianism.

It’s also called American exceptionalism!
