Negative connotations
It seems that the Gadsden flag has been swept up in the public relations campaign that has labeled Evangelical Christians, American Flag fliers, displayers of bumper stickers, and gun owners as terrorists. About the same minimal amount of knowledge was utilized to make the determination that the Gadsden flag has negative connotations.
The rattlesnake was Benjamin Franklin's preference as a symbol of the United States. He actually used a segmented picture of the snake as an advertising campaign to remind the country of the importance of unity. Later the rattlesnake appeared on the first Union Jack of the United States Navy and was designated as the flag to be flown on Naval vessels during the war on terrorism.
Slow to anger but deadly once provoked, the rattlesnake is considered by many as an apt representative of the spirit of America. The history of the Gadsden flag can be found at
