House speaker election live updates: No House vote tonight as GOP goes back to drawing board for new speaker

House Republicans selected Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota as their latest speaker designate after five rounds of voting behind closed doors Tuesday, only for him to drop out hours later.

Emmer defeated Mike Johnson of Louisiana 117-97 on the fifth ballot after Byron Donalds of Florida, Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, Austin Scott of Georgia, Jack Bergman of Michigan and Pete Sessions of Texas were eliminated in the previous rounds of voting. ---More...
