How Social Security increases are calculated
Complex and convoluted
The mystery of how Social Security increases are calculated is designed to keep us in the dark. It is based on the Consumer Price Index W. Remember the W because it is important. There are two CPI. The First is "U" and it cover 89% of the population. The "W" is a sub-set of "U" and covers only 28% of the population, and that 28% is clerical and urban workers. With me so far? Then they take a basket of goods: food, housing, apparel, transportation, medical care, recreation , education and other, and figure the cost of these good on a monthly bases. The CPI is also calculated by regions using the W subset.
So, here in Southwest Florida, the average person is not an urban clerical worker, being in the South East region would lump us with Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, Charlotte, etc. And as for those "basket of goods", it must take some fuzzy math to determine that our CPI is only .003. Housing alone around here has skyrocketed. Medical services and prescriptions are higher. Food prohibitively expensive for many. Recreation? Been to the movies lately? How about Busch Gardens or Disney? I guess the ocean is still free but the parking may not be.
Personally, I find it the same as with most government programs. They are so complex and convoluted that all we can do is nod our heads and say "thank you massah" because that is how it feels. Just one more reason Trump looks good. He wants to make things easier to understand and easier to deal with. In doing so, much of the deception would disappear.
