Houston, TX - In Washington, IRS official Lois Lerner again refused to testify to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. True the Vote's Catherine Engelbrecht is saddened to see that Lerner's silence obstructs the American people's right to gain full knowledge of the scandal's details, and what Lerner specifically knows about them.
"Nine months after she first refused to testify in the Internal Revenue Service's abuse of citizens engaging in the political process, as is our right and duty, IRS official Lois Lerner refused again," Engelbrecht said. "When an alphabet soup of government agencies descended on and investigated me and my family, I didn't have the option of doing what Lerner did today. I had to submit to invasive and aggressive investigations despite the fact that I had done absolutely nothing wrong.
"Lerner pleaded the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. In doing so, Lerner may be angling for immunity from prosecution. Lerner's decision delays disclosure of the IRS scandal, and therefore is a setback to the American people having a solution to the administration's abuse of citizens."
"Chairman Darrell Issa is right to pledge that the investigation will continue. The American people have the right to know what Lerner knows. The American people have the right to know that when the government oversteps its bounds, as it did in this case, the facts will be found out and justice will be served."
