There is a giant difference between "leak" and "hack"

Julian Assange: Victim of The Powers That Be

I think he [Julian Assange] is a warning to other journalists who might publish stories that The Powers That Be do not want to be published.  It’s a way of warning off other journalists in the future and telling them "Don’t do this, or we might lock you up in prison for 175 years, even though nothing you have done is illegal."-- Roger Waters "Tucker Carlson Tonight" 3/6/20

Former "Pink Floyd" front man Roger Waters and I seldom see eye to eye ideologically (I can hear him muttering "Well thank God for that").  Nevertheless, our views are quite simpatico when it comes to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.  Note that the name is WikiLeaks, not WikiHacks.  More about that later.

Since 2006 WikiLeaks has been a purveyor of leaked (not hacked) digital documents from various governments around the world – much to the chagrin and displeasure of said governments.

Some people (such as the Robert Mueller team) seem to have an inordinate amount of trouble differentiating between a leak and a hack.  Allow me to give a brief description of the two, strictly as a public service.

An example of a leak would be someone who has legitimate access to certain computer data sending such data on to a third party, or copying such data onto a thumb drive (and then sending the contents of the thumb drive on).  A hack occurs when someone who does not have legitimate access to certain computer data, breaks into (i.e. hacks into) the computer data in question and steals it from the outside, so to speak.

There is a giant difference between "leak" and "hack", in fact, in this case, they’re mutually exclusive. A leak is by an inside player and a hack is by an outside player.    -- Mark Marlboro

The political left considered Julian Assange a cultural hero par excellence for releasing such documents as the ones leaked by US Army soldier Chelsea Manning…however, Assange quickly became persona non grata to the left after he released documents leaked (not hacked) from the Democrat National Committee server.  The political left has largely treated him as a social pariah ever since.

We have said repeatedly, our [WikiLeaks] source is not the Russian government….

Who are you going to believe, Julian Assange and your lying eyes and ears, or left-wing globalist media propaganda?  Personally, I’ll stick with Julian Assange.

There was no hack of the Democratic National Committee’s system…not by the Russians, not by anyone else. Hard science now demonstrates it was a leak—a download executed locally with a memory key or a similarly portable data-storage device. In short, it was an inside job by someone with access to the DNC’s system. -- Patrick Lawrence (quoting VIPS) "A New Report Raises Big Questions About Last Year’s DNC Hack"

Many people (including moi) believe that the DNC server data was downloaded onto a flash drive by 27-year-old Democrat operative and Bernie Bro, Seth Rich, who was upset by the way Bernie Sanders had been treated by the Democrat establishment.  Not long after the leaked DNC server emails were posted by WikiLeaks, Seth Rich was murdered in Washington DC.  The killing remains unsolved.

Julian Assange has offered a financial reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Seth Rich’s murderer.  Why do you suppose Assange would do that – unless he knew Seth Rich.  And why would Assange know Seth Rich?  I don’t think you need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure this one out folks.

Whistleblowers go to significant efforts to get us material and often very significant risks. As a 27-year-old, works for the DNC, was shot in the back, murdered just a few weeks ago for unknown reasons as he was walking down the street in Washington… I’m suggesting that our sources take risks.

-- Julian Assange "Nieuwsuur interview with Julian Assange" (Dutch TV)

Assange was arrested for skipping bail (a flimsy excuse if ever there was one) last April.  His sentence purportedly expired last September, but he remains locked up in Britain’s notorious Belmarsh prison.  He awaits possible extradition to the United States where he is looking at up to 175 years in prison.

"Faced with [the] evidence of untreated and ongoing torture" of Julian Assange a group of more than 60 medical doctors submitted a letter to the prestigious medical journal "The Lancet" (founded 1823) describing Assange’s rapidly deteriorating physical and mental condition.  If you speak truth to power, it is wise to keep in mind that your "reward" may be a boot on the neck.
