TORONTO July vehicle sales in Canada were weaker overall, down 4.9% compared to July 2010. This leaves year to date sales for vehicles ahead only marginally at 1.5% over 2010 sales through July.

For the AIAMC membership, July sales of 70,547 were 6.4% lower than July 2010 sales and overall sales for AIAMC members year-to-date fell to 492,254 down slightly(1.7%) from year-to-date sales in 2010. Overall truck sales were down 3.9% from July 2010 resulting in truck sales of 78,093. The truck share of the overall market was 55.1%, an increase over last July’s share (54.6%). For AIAMC members, truck sales were down 4.3% in July to 25,573 . Trucks represented 32.6% of total AIAMC member sales, lower than the 35.4% share of sales last July. “July brought with it reminders, on almost a daily basis, of the current global economic challenges that ultimately create uneasiness and uncertainty in the minds of consumers considering big ticket items, such as motor vehicles. Overall vehicle sales in July of 141,472 were below the five year average sales for July of 144,454,” said David Adams, President of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC). “Consumer confidence levels throughout 2011 have largely been lower than last year necessitating the increased use of attractive incentives to draw consumers into new car showrooms,” added Adams. “The upside of a challenging sales market is that it is a great time to buy a car.” Even with the overall market down almost 5% a number of AIAMC member companies managed impressive sales gains and, in some cases, recorded the best July sales ever. AIAMC members’ market share for July was 49.9%, down fractionally from 50.7% in July 2010. Positive sales results arising from within the AIAMC membership were as follows: Highlights: Audi – July sales of 1,370 up 14.2% from July 2010. BMW – Record July sales of 2,867 up 14.1% from July 2010. Hyundai - July sales of 12,753 up 10.9% from July 2010. Kia – Record July sales of 6,383 up 12.9% from July 2010. VW – July sales of 4,522 up 16.5% from July 2010. Volvo – July sales of 736 up 3.4% from July 2010.
