June sales cap positive first half auto sales for 2013

TORONTO – June auto sales of 171,608 units capped a strong first half of 2013 in which sales of light duty vehicles were up 2.2% (883,667 units) while sales for the month of June were up marginally by 1.3% compared to a year ago. Following on sales increases of 9% in April and 5% in May, the June numbers contributed to a strong spring selling seasons. At the current pace, 2013 has an opportunity to represent one of the best years ever for light duty vehicle sales in Canada, and is tracking with reach of the record 1.73 million units sold in 2002.

With 171,608 units sold, June continued the trend of being above the five year historical average for the month of June (157,970 units), aided by increasingly positive consumer confidence levels, which were 9.5 points higher this month than the corresponding month last year, according to the Conference Board of Canada. For the member companies of the Global Automakers of Canada, overall sales of 92,144 units were essentially unchanged from last June. First half sales for the members of 477,065 units were also essentially unchanged from the first half of 2012.

A number of our members have sales results substantially higher than the market for June, including record volumes for some companies,” added Adams For June, overall passenger car sales declined by 4.9% to 75,021 units, while light truck sales increased by 6.7% to 96,587 units. For the first half of 2013, passenger car sales were down and light truck sales were up by 2.2% and 5.9% respectively. GAC members’ car sales declined 5.2% to 55,102 units, while light truck sales increased 7.7% to 37,402 units in June. For the first half of the year, GAC passenger car sales declined 4%, while light truck sales increased 7.3% Light trucks represented 56.3% of all sales in June compared to 53.4% last June. Year to date light trucks represent 55.7% of total sales compared to 53.7% last year. GAC members sales represented 53.7% of total market sales for June and 54% of first half market sales.
