Paula Vize, Dog Portraits Old Retriever, Black Lab puppy and Border Terriers A British artist, renowned for her hunting and shooting paintings, has just finished her latest commission. Paula Vize from Hampshire has completed a painting of a Border Terrier, entitled Mr Pip. “The owner commissioned it for his daughter, who is moving abroad,” explains Paula. “My dog portraits are all produced from a meeting in person. That way I do a portrait of the animal concerned rather than simply a dog picture. It is important to get the relationship between owner and animal right. For instance, is it a much loved pet or a working dog? Some relationships are particularly special as with the Hounds for Heroes dogs. You see the softer side of some big farmers within the relationship of man and dog.”
One commission that Paula has produced was for a couple who each owned two dogs. “The old retriever and the black lab puppy were his while the border terriers were his wife's.” Other commissions have included Oscar, a Dalmatian. “From my first visit to when I took the photos for the portrait I had to increase the spots because they develop as the breed gets older.” She adds: “These commissions came by word of mouth, through my website and an exhibition at Hilliers in Romsey. Dogs are always a delight to work with though you have to be careful not to let them enjoy themselves too much before you take the photos otherwise you end up with a slobbering mess. I've learnt that one the hard way!” Paula Vize is world renowned for her contemporary and non stuffy approach to the hunting and shooting world of art as well as animals and portraiture. Working in varying media she suits it to the subject and will paint children’s portaits in watercolour because this medium is strong but translucent "and is so well geared to their wonderful innocence". "Hounds and horses have a strength suited to oils or acrylics," she explains. Paula exhibits all round the world from Scotland to Cape Town, South Africa, and her paintings are in collections from Saudi Arabia to Australia. "It is lovely knowing that things so English have appeal so far away," she says. Paula has worked with interior design companies and regularly exhibits at The Royal College of Art and the Society of Equestrian Artists. Paula Vize, Dog Portraits Buster and Lily
