Man who beat wheelchair-bound victim to death sobs in court, postponing sentencing

The registered s*x offender who randomly threw a 63-year-old man in a wheelchair to the ground and repeatedly slammed his head into the sidewalk until he died has been sentenced to 22 years


SEATTLE — The sentencing hearing for a man convicted of murder had to be stopped in King County Superior Court Friday afternoon after the defendant became too emotional to proceed.

Gabriel Vargas-Garcia, 28, beat a 63-year-old man who was in a wheelchair to death at the Bellevue Transit Center in 2022. Investigators said the attack was random and happened shortly after Vargas-Garcia was released from jail for a prior assault.

Vargas-Garcia pleaded guilty in January to charges of murder in the second degree and two counts of malicious mischief. ---More...
