The weekly had drawn repeated threats for its caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed and other sketches and articles on Muslim figures. Just hours before the attack, the magazine on its Twitter account posted a cartoon entitled “Still No Attacks in France” depicting Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi giving a New Year’s greeting. “Just wait,” the drawing shows a fighter saying. “We have until the end of January to present our New Year’s wishes.” The cover of the newspaper’s latest edition also notes the release of a book, “Submission,” a fictional account of France led by an Islamic party that imposes strict codes such as banning women from the workplace. In his end-of-year address last week, Hollande raised concerns about “rising, worrying threats” of terrorism and growing intolerance in France, which is home to Europe’s largest Muslim population. A police official, Luc Poignant, told the Associated Press that the attackers escaped in two vehicles. As Rob and I were discussing our approach to this piece, we realized there's not really that much of an angle aside from the obvious. As he said, "Isn't this pretty much what we've come to expect of Islam?" Yep. It sure is. They threaten to kill anyone who criticizes them, and sometimes they follow through, as they did today in Paris. We also discussed whether the people who claim Christians are "just as bad" and trot out the "more wars have been fought in the name of religion" argument will ever wake up. We doubt it. Think about this: As beneath contempt as the Westboro Baptist Church crowd is, with their funeral pickets and "God hates #" signs, even they don't kill anyone. They're about the worst Christianity has to offer, and they offend to the enth degree, but that's all they do. Islam is the home of terrorism and mass murder, whether it's 9/11 or ISIS beheadings or mass slaughters like this. Have we finally reached the point where we can plainly say so?
