Limousine Liberals

Mercedes Marxists and Hollywood Hypocrites

As we contemplate the Academy Awards (and fewer of us do each year, it seems!), we may want to re-familiarize ourselves with just who all these people are and what they represent. They are artists and entertainers who often masquerade as world policy leaders. They are also among the most blatant hypocrites on the planet.

Take George Lucas, for example. I was watching his DVD Re-Release of his first film, THX 1138 and turned on the "Director's Commentary" track where Lucas ranted on about the wastefulness of rampant consumerism and people who "buy things for the sake of buying things". The jacket liner of the DVD also laments Lucas' fears and concerns of a "shift away from creativity and individual achievement and toward a corporate, consumerist mentality"   No one would know more about that than Mr. Lucas, the undisputed king of the corporate, consumerist mentality whose own actions were central to just that very rise in such consumerism. He releases and re-releases his films numerous times with just enough extra or new material on each new edition to justify the fans buying them yet one more time, making the previous editions obsolete.   He's just one of the typical Hollywood "Limousine Liberals" who never live by what they preach.   They sit up there in their studios and on stages, spewing rhetoric about how horrible "American Imperialism" is, how capitalism is a cancer on society and that we need more socialism and higher taxes for all those failed social programs, yet they somehow manage to exclude themselves from their own pontifications. Instead, they profit immensely, more than most everyone else, from the very things that they preach against!   They fly from town to town on large,  fuel-guzzling private jets but say that average people who drive their families around in SUV's are destroying the planet.   They tell us we shouldn't cut down trees but they have mansions built from California Redwood and furniture of rare Honduran Mahogany.   They tell us we are wasting land with "urban sprawl" and corporate farms but build their massive personal mansions on countless acres of rare beachfront property.   They tell us we should ride on bicycles or in buses and other public transportation to save energy, yet they ride around alone in chauffeured stretch limousines or tool around in high-powered sports cars.   They tell us we must be more socialist in our society and promote a collectivist mentality, yet they rake in millions of dollars in profits for themselves using the capitalist system to their greatest advantage.   They tell us we shouldn't be allowed to use guns to defend ourselves yet they hire personal bodyguards who pack heat.   They tell average citizens that we don't pay enough taxes for wealth redistribution to the "poor" yet they live in the lap of luxury that very few of the taxpaying average citizens will ever even SEE let alone experience, donating only relatively token amounts to charity, mostly for the purpose of grandstanding and self-promotion.   They say they are all in support of trade unions but then take steps to film their movies in other countries such as Canada where the American dollar buys more using cheaper, government (taxpayer!) subsidized labour and avoid paying the inflated Hollywood union wages (that one I can even speak personally to since I actually worked on a Travolta film in Montreal about ten years ago and found out all about it!).   I could go on and on.   Now, to be clear, and this is very important, I would NEVER begrudge any of these Hollywood types their successes in becoming as wealthy as they wish and having all the things they desire. In fact, I'm all for it. However, in living as they do and not as they say WE should, these Mercedes Marxists are the very definition of the words "blatant hypocrisy". Yet it's amazing how so many ordinary citizens are so gullible as to actually take what these extremely ignorant, childishly foolish and outrageously stupid people say seriously when they spew their leftist rhetoric that flies in the face of these celebrities' very own lifestyle and actions.   It might be a good idea to remember all this as they get up on the stage during their self-aggrandizing awards ceremonies and tell the world what upstanding heroes they all are.   E. James Small currently lives near Truro, Nova Scotia. James was born in Montreal in 1965. James’ parents were both independent commercial artists, but they were English and were therefore boycotted by French businesses in the 1970’s so they opted to retire and move to Apple River, Nova Scotia in 1980 (there’s a whole story to that one!). Since then I have also lived in several towns in NS, such as Springhill, Amherst and also lived in Oshawa, Ontario and Brandon, Manitoba, but Nova Scotia, unfortunately, keeps dragging me back. I currently earn a living as a modelmaker, my primary passion, building models for everyone from individuals to businesses. James can be reached at: jim@smallartworks.ca
