Lessons not learned, Walkerton, Ottawa Sewergate

M.O.E. Fails to Learn from Experience

The M.O.E. has granted a "Certificate of Approval" to Horton Township in Renfrew County to install municipal septic storage tanks within 50 m. of a family’s well and home. If a farmer planned to build a manure storage tank however, it would typically be required to be more than 400 m. from a neighbour’s well and home.

The M.O.E. has not learned from Walkerton, has not learned from Ottawa Sewergate, and has not learned how to deal with municipalities or private land owners. They vilify private landowners and farmers, branding them as guilty of environmental crimes until they prove themselves innocent. Meanwhile they let the municipalities off the environmental hook. Horton Township and the M.O.E. are duplicitous in the proposed septic storage facility in Horton Township. The affected landowner and farmer, 84 year old Beulah Reid, with the assistance of the Ontario Landowners Association, will be serving a "Notice of Intent" today at the M.O.E. offices in Ottawa. Beulah Reid and the OLA will not accept one law for municipal governments and a harsher law for individuals. Good neighbours don't do this to each other. The job of government is to protect people and property.
