The debate over abortion rights intensifies with the release of a study in India that says that women who have had an abortion are 636% more likely to develop breast cancer that those who have not. Regardless, abortions continue to become more available as both Ireland and Israel go down the slippery slope of broadening their legal abortion scope.
A report published in the Indian Journal of Cancer, suggests that terminating a pregnancy makes the breast’s epithelium tissue more likely to act as a cancer-producing agent. Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences compared three hundred and twenty breast cancer cases at a hospital in New Delhi to an equally number of healthy individuals, which constituted the control group. The journal states: “It has been suggested that abortions leave the breast epithelium in a proliferative state with an increased susceptibility to carcinogenesis. History of abortion was also found to be positively associated with the risk of breast cancer with 6.26 times higher risk in women having a history of abortion. The history of abortions was found to be significantly higher in breast cancer cases as compared to [healthy] controls.” When you think about the process it makes sense. A woman’s body is changing as pregnancy begins to prepare for childbirth and the breasts are a key part of that. All of a sudden all of the chemical changes abruptly and unexpectedly halt! How does the body react?

The study is supported to a lesser but more concrete degree by the results published in the peer-reviewed international journal Cancer Causes and Control of a Chinese study. It found that the risk of breast cancer increased by 44 percent following a termination, 76 percent following two and 89 percent following three or more terminations. But it seems regardless of the ever increasing evidence that abortions are bad for women’s health, (to say nothing of the unborn child) national governments continue to co-dependently bow to the wishes of special interests who see pregnant women as victims in need of help and ‘a solution’. In the Republic of Ireland, the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Act will allow terminations to “eliminate the risk of self-destruction,” where the mother threatens to commit suicide if she is denied the procedure. Presumably the mother merely has to intimate suicide to get her own way, which will presumably lead to broad interpretations and make the procedure available to everybody. Contrastingly the medical community has established that there is no evidence to show that terminating a pregnancy assists in mental health issues. Maria Steen of the Iona Institute, a Conservative Catholic lobby in Ireland said: “Irish law already allows the ending of a pregnancy when there is no other choice and there is a clear threat to the life of the mother. A decision to include a threat of suicide as a ground for abortion would also be wrong in principle because it would authorise for the first time ever the deliberate and direct destruction of unborn human life in Ireland”. The Irish law comes following the death of 31-year- old Savita Halappanavar, an Indian woman who died in Ireland’s Galway hospital after suffering from blood poisoning thought to have been caused by a miscarriage. This caused pro-choice activists to claim that if abortions were legal the woman could have been saved. However Father Shenan Boquet, president of Human Life international said that there was no evidence to indicate that "a Catholic ethos" prevented responsible treatment of the mother, and called news reports that that was the case "demonizing the church's position on abortion". He described the debate resulting from the event as "activism masquerading as compassion and moral outrage.” Meanwhile Israel is sadly expanding its abortion on demand funding with an expected increase of 30% per year in the procedure. Legislation will expand free abortions from just under 18’s and over 40’s to all women – currently women in between those ages need permission from a medical panel though it is almost always given. The slippery slope already in motion in Ireland is reaching its pinnacle in Israel. The latter demonstrates where the former will eventually get to. Disappointingly all taxpayers will end up paying for the choices of a minority, and not just for the immediate medical cost but for all the emotional pain that each woman carries with her for her whole life. Andrea Williams of Christian Concern predicts that Ireland will eventually go the same way as Israel saying: "The law is unnecessary and unwanted by the people of Ireland. The law in Ireland already permits doctors to terminate a pregnancy in circumstances where there is no other choice because of the threat to the mother’s life. There are real fears that the further weakening of the law will pave the way for abortion ‘on-demand’ in the country." The way of the left is continually being paved and can only be stopped by a continuing and vociferous opposition. Hearts and minds are easily taken by the broad and easy path, but it is the path of righteousness that must continue to be strived for.
