No Place Like Home

“There is a word ever dear to our hearts, but dearer at the Christmas season than at any other time. Our hearts agree with the old saying, “There is no place like home”. What charm, what fascination clings to that word! It does not matter whether it is a mansion or a cottage, as long as it is our home. Childhood affections nestle around it, and it’s the pride and comfort of venerable old age. Christmas is the time when our memory and thoughts gather round our home. Amid all our pleasures and comforts, we have a thought--a loving thought for those who are far away, whether distance or death separates us--we will remember them all at Christmas. We miss the voices and the tender glances of the absentees. We notice a vacant chair. Perhaps on coming to the Christmas Mass, we may cast a wistful glance at the churchyard; in their narrow home; some dear one is at rest. When on Christmas morning, we go from our homes to Holy Mass, while cheery decorations proclaim anew that the SAVIOUR has come, may there well up in each of us some of that same deep joy and devotion that filled the hearts of the shepherds when, watching their flocks on the hillside of Judea, they heard the heavenly chorus announce first glad tidings of peace on earth among everyone of good will.”
