“For years, we’ve witnessed an erosion of our democracy due to corruption, extreme partisanship, and attempts to uphold systems of oppression. But despite the challenges we face in rebuilding our democracy, there is hope—and a clear path forward.”According to his sidekick Eric Holder:
“President Obama is right, friend. With new Democratic majorities in Congress and a new administration, we can reform and restore our democracy so that it truly represents the people. “On the federal level, we can pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to enshrine the voting rights the Republicans have been trying to dismantle for the past decade.”
“All On The Line's state-by-state approach is key to building accountability when party leaders like (Allen) West openly call for partisanship over fairness. We are going to mobilize folks to call for transparency and accountability in redistricting. In fact, just yesterday, I hosted a training with volunteers in Texas about submitting official public input on the redistricting process. With your help, we can continue expanding our efforts all across the country” “If 27 people from California made a $15 donation right now to our Democracy Restoration Fund, it would help fund our state-by-state strategy to provide political accountability in Texas and all across the country. “We're already seeing attempts to erode accountability here in Texas. After the Texas House refused to pass commonsense amendments that would mandate procedures like providing live recordings of redistricting committee meetings and enabling virtual testimony for the public to weigh in -- we launched an online advocacy tool so folks could speak out by contacting their representative. “Our team understands extreme politicians in Texas and all across our country see the writing on the wall and know that manipulating the redistricting process is one of their last chances to undemocratically hold onto power. It's why they block transparency measures -- or as we saw in Texas, launch "public input hearings" with zero notice for the public to prepare. “But Texas is just one of our target states -- there are many more states where we're working to ensure accountability and transparency during redistricting and we need your help to make that happen. “With your help, we can save our democracy by ensuring fair maps -- the first step is providing transparency and accountability during the redistricting process. “Make no mistake: the latest efforts to restrict voting rights and undermine our democracy are a direct response to our hard-won political victories. “State legislatures across the country -- overwhelmingly in gerrymandered states -- have proposed more than 100 bills to restrict voting rights, undermine our democracy, and diminish the political power of those who need it most. That's not what the American people want -- in fact, a resounding majority support reforms that would protect and expand voting rights. Here are the facts: (Barack Obama)
“The filibuster is just another way the minority party can wield disproportionate power. This obstructionist tactic hinders the will of the people in the same way gerrymandering hinders representative democracy -- it prevents voters from calling the shots.”
- Mitch McConnell and his party can still obstruct legislation because of the filibuster.
- 100+ bills to restrict voting have been introduced in state legislatures since November.
- 67% of American voters support the For the People Act -- which would make voting easier and end partisan congressional gerrymandering.
- The Senate can pass this popular reform bill by eliminating the filibuster -- an accidental byproduct of a rule change that was not the Founders' original intent.
