TIME FOR A PUBLIC CLIMATE CHANGE DEBATE

Open letter to the President of the Canadian Meteorological and Ocean Society

Dr. Bill Crawford, President – Canadian Meteorological and Ocean Society Research Scientist, Institute of Ocean Sciences, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Sidney, B.C. Adjunct Professor, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria, B.C.

Dear Dr. Crawford, This evening at the public presentation (poster at http://www.cmos.ca/congress2010/PublicLecture_e.pdf - about 300 people attended the talk) of the Canadian Meteorological and Ocean Society (CMOS)/Canadian Geophysical Union (CGU) Congress (see http://www.cmos.ca/congress2010/index.htm for the congress), the guest speaker, Dr. Warwick Vincent of Laval University in Quebec (see http://www.cmos.ca/congress2010/publiclecturee.html), was quite supportive when I brought up the idea of a public debate between climate scientists about the degree to which human CO2 emissions are driving climate. Please find at http://tinyurl.com/2f5pvcu (broadband download time about 20 seconds) an audio file of the British Antarctic Survey video misrepresentations I referenced in my question, as well as my question and Dr. Vincent’s answer. I know Dr. Vincent was not speaking on behalf of CMOS or CGU but his open minded answer begs a further question – wouldn’t it be a good idea for CMOS to sponsor a public debate between climate experts about the causes of climate change? This could help Canadians better appreciate the actual state affairs in the climate science community concerning this exceptionally complex issue. My question appeared to have some impact and a number of people, scientists and students, came up to me afterwards asking for more info on The Climate Scientists’ Register that I reference in my question and is currently the top item on our home page at http://www.climatescienceinternational.org. Would CMOS sponsor an open public debate between climate scientists about the causes of the climate change we have witnessed in the past 100 years? Media, some of whom I have Bcc’d on this e-mail would also be very interested, I am sure. Sincerely, Tom Harris, B. Eng., M. Eng. (Mech.) Executive Director International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC) Ottawa, Ontario
