Oprah’s Secret and the Law of Attraction

Just a few short years ago, there was a fledgling little book/ DVD called The Secret that promised that anything you wanted would become a reality if you just simply thought about it. This Secret, also called the Law of Attraction, states that whatever you want from the universe would be attracted to the energy of your thoughts and become a reality.

This Law of Attraction, we were told, was the secret behind the success of the masters and great minds of the ages, but it had been kept hidden from society for many thousands of years. This book/DVD was amazingly, a financial flop and was destined to remain a ‘secret’ until Oprah began to promote this book. Yes, Oprah turned this failing book into a billion dollar enterprise by promoting this ‘Secret’ in her ‘cult like’ following of ‘whatever Oprah says must be true’ believers. While that might appear harsh, the power of everything Oprah says in our society is immense. Just look at what happened to the support and approval ratings for Obama once Oprah threw her endorsement behind him. Oprah joyously shared with her followers that the secret behinds the success of her empire had been due to her living ‘the secret’ of the Law of Attraction for many years without even knowing it. If this is in fact true, that we can have the universe respond to our every thought without even realizing it, then ‘The Secret’, as it was presented to the general public is a dangerous thing. In its feel good, materialistic, shallow methodology, the secret only scratched the surface of the power of the Law of Attraction and never truly addressed how to handle such an amazing force within the universe. Thus more than ever, dreams were unfulfilled and dreams were shattered. Oprah, who seems to have it all, is living proof that there is more to the Law of Attraction than we were told. Recently, the announcement of Oprah breaking the 200 pound barrier was front page headline news. Everywhere. There she was, the only cover girl that O magazine has ever had, posing against an image of her former fit and healthy self. The headlines of Oprah magazine screamed out ‘How did I let this happen AGAIN?’. While not wanting to kick someone while they are down, the image of Oprah earlier professing that ‘you will get from the universe whatever you think about’, then now proclaiming ‘how did this happen AGAIN?’, seemed to be contradictory and worth looking into a bit deeper. Was this weight gain the Secret at play or is the Law of Attraction a sham? Did Oprah somehow manifest and attract this weight problem upon her self? If so why would someone do that? Understand this is not an attack on the lady, but Oprah has often used herself as a tool from which she desired others to learn and as such, her struggles with weight can be a great learning tool for all of us. Here are the things that Oprah, in her own words, has proclaimed to be the reasons for her return to the ‘dreaded 2-0-0 mark’ that has caused her remarkable amounts of personally inflicted anger and self professed public embarrassment. The causes range from a medically diagnosed thyroid disorder (it felt like a prison sentence), a cocky know it all attitude ( I thought I had it beat), karma (payback for telling other people that they were weak and all they had to do was….), and addiction to food (it is my drug of choice). Each of those items with their associated thought processes can definitely have an impact upon the physiological functioning of the body. The more persistent those thoughts become, the more power they can possess. So it seems, at first glance, that the Law of Attraction is real. She physically manifested disease and depression after she told herself that she had lost the battle and had given up. She became what she believed she would become. The physical outcomes that Oprah experienced were natural outcomes to her fears and thoughts, yet it appears that the may have only been secondary symptoms to the deeper thoughts she was manifesting, perhaps only subconsciously. If, as the Law of Attraction and Oprah both teach, that our thoughts alone possess the power to manifest our dreams from the universe, then why weren’t Oprah’s thoughts of success, charity and self empowerment able to overcome the energy and impact of the negative thoughts that came about from those conditions listed above? If she knew how she should act, think and behave, then how and why did this really happen? Why did she still need the comfort of food to “bring me peace and comfort” that her acts of charity, if purely motivated, should have been able to provide? Two possible reasons might be ego and self sabotage. In the empire that is Oprah, perhaps it is her desire to use herself as a model for the struggles of the average person and how to overcome them that lead to attracting her current condition? Perhaps she believes that the more ‘average’ she is, the more believable she will be? Perhaps, because she confesses that she ‘has to be the one’ on her magazine cover, she has to be the face of the empire, perhaps this is a way for her to further the kingdom of Oprah and bring in more sales? Her ongoing saga and struggle should be sufficient fodder for a number of future shows, stories and articles. While this may be harsh, her own cover story teases us into buying her next issue of the magazine for details on the ‘full story’ regarding Oprah’s weight story. Is weight gain, in part, good for business? Is there some reward, be it emotional or financial that might be achieved from this weight gain issue? Again, this is not an attack on Oprah but rather an opportunity to illuminate the subtle power of ego and self sabotage that resides deep within all of us. The letters and feedback of sympathy extended towards Oprah have been a source of fascination. Essentially, they state that the public gives their ‘permission’ for her to be fat because she does so much good for others. ‘Take it easy on yourself’, ‘do not be so harsh in judging yourself’ the comments on her website echo in harmony. Yet she who has positioned herself as a role model is now, by promoting such sentiments, perpetrating the belief that it is ok to be a failure to such a degree that her very life was in jeopardy ( her own claim) as long as you do a few good things publicly. That patronizing belief of complacency and acceptance of mediocrity in our lives can also have a profound effect on our physical outcomes. In fact, it is one belief that almost cost Oprah her life once. Whatever the real reason for the weight gain, which we may never know or which may never be acknowledged publicly (for who dares to speak evil of Oprah?), this we can learn about the Law of Attraction. The Secret is more than the power of thought casually thrown against the Universe in the casual hope that we will get what we ask for. While The Secret focuses upon the acquisition of things to provide happiness, human beings are far too complex a creature to be able to readily be pacified long term through material possessions. There is a core belief system within each of us that needs to be tapped into in order to provide lasting and meaningful happiness. We can begin to learn about these governing principles through studying the interaction between the mind, the spirit and the body. That’s not rocket science, that’s just the way it is. But remember, if you always do what you have always done then you will always get what you have always got. W.
