Veterans Memorial Monument

Oscar Goodman’s and Gary Reese’s unkept pledge to American Veterans

On April 15, 2009, the Las Vegas City Council, under the direction of then-Mayor Oscar Goodman and then-Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese, approved American Shooters, Inc. as fundraiser to generate $800,000 for the construction of a Veterans Memorial Monument at the closed down Huntridge Circle Park on Maryland Parkway between Charleston and Oakey Blvds. near downtown Las Vegas.

To show their sincerity, the City Council commissioned an artist rendering of the Memorial. Then nothing happened for over 27 months. image On June 1, 2011, the project's founder, retired United States Marine Peter Christoff, informed the City Council that $192,000 was reportedly collected by American Shooters, but the money is no where to be found. He also told the council that the owners of American Shooters appeared on a TV program and pledged to personally make up any deficiencies in the event the total $800,000 could not be raised through public solicitation. Mayor Pro Tem Reese tried to cut Mr. Christoff off while he was speaking at the podium, but upon being pressed for a response announced that American Shooters is going through "reorganization" in an attempt to explain the delay. Reese then stated that the Memorial would be delayed at least two years based on American Shooters' purported financial situation. Mr. Christoff and other veterans attending the council meeting did not accept Reese's explanation, and produced a video to tell their story. Will an unkept promise and a possible $192,000 rip off in the name of American Veterans become the legacy of Oscar Goodman and Gary Reese? Here is a video that tells the sad story:
