Political Labels

Part of the division within our country comes because of labels. For years we separated ourselves into 2 categories, Democrat and Republican. Then a few disenfranchised pioneers started 3rd parties-Libertarian, Independent, etc.

These 3rd parties started mainly because of disappointment with the evolution of the two major parties. Both major parties have come to represent views and ideals outside of those of average Americans. Sure, we can find nuggets within either party but not a philosophy. In recent years, the labels Progressive and Conservative have come forward as better representing a mindset of different Americans. Today, both these labels also have very negative connotations to half the voters. In order to really affect change, we have to look beyond the labels to the candidates. No longer is voting the party line wise. Every candidate and every position should be viewed in the context of our troubled times. Every amendment should also be weighed carefully for intended and unintended consequences. Labels can lead us toward disaster. Being informed and open minded is the only hope we have to achieve a good outcome to this election. John Libby
