Reporter Michael Fumento Languishing in Bucaramanga Prison
Never thought the day would come when I would find it a matter of life or death trying to get a message through to President Donald Trump.  But that’s where I am today.

Courageous Canada Free Press (CFP) columnist Michael Fumento, who saw combat as an embedded reporter with United States troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, is in a Bucaramanga, Colombia prison on trumped up charges where he has been held without bail since Easter Sunday. Worse yet, Fumento is without the prescribed medications he needs to keep him alive.

Desperate appeals made on Fumento’s behalf to the U.S. Embassy in Bogota by his friend Patrick D. Hahn of Baltimore have gone unanswered.

Worried sick, Dr. Hahn, an affiliate professor of Biology at Loyola University, Maryland and Fumento’s fellow CFP columnist, has been unable to reach Michael’s brother, Matthew and believes it is because Matthew is making funeral arrangements for their mother who died only a week ago.

Hahn told CFP on the telephone this morning that Michael’s troubles began Easter Sunday when he was attacked on the streets of Bucaramanga by a man armed with a knife. The police arrived and arrested Fumento. He was brought before a judge and accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at a house owned by the father of the knife-wielding assailant. The bomb-thrower was described by witnesses only as “a man wearing blue jeans.” Michael was charged with arson and attempted murder.

Hahn, was able to reach Michael in the Bucaramanga prison, by telephone and is deeply worried knowing that Michael has no way of getting his meds.

“Since Easter Sunday,  he has been held without bail, and denied access to his prescribed medications including clonazepam , a benzodiazepine. Abrupt discontinuation of benzodiazepines has been linked to psychosis, suicidal ideation, status epilepticus seizures, and death,” Hahn said.

“The United States Embassy in Bogota still has not visited him, even though they are required by law to visit any American citizen held in police custody within 48 hours.”

Fumento left Mexico, where he now lives for Colombia in early March. Knowing he was in Colombia on business, I worried about him and advised him to “jump on a plane and get back home as soon as possible”.

Hahn is asking anyone who wants to help to call the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, (011-57-1-275-2000) although when he called there himself, he was told to send an email. When he followed their instructions and sent the email, he got only an auto reply back.

Willing to move Heaven and Earth to free Michael, CFP is asking anyone in Washington, D.C. to pick up the phone and call their embassy in Bogota.
Until then, God keep you safe, Michael.
