Thank you for the commitment you have shown to recovering the remains of American war dead in recent years. I’ve dedicated my efforts of late to building interest in Washington in systematically researching all relevant US and foreign archives, and contacting surviving witnesses where our personnel fell, with an eye toward locating the maximum possible Missing while both witnesses and family members themselves survive. There is an opportunity for a real breakthrough in Washington, but it will only become law if we all let our voices be heard. I need your help in getting large numbers of interested, concerned citizens to take 3 minutes to contact Washington through our web site at projecthomecoming.org. Visitors to the site can sign a petition that we’ll forward to the authorities in the Defense Department, Congress and the Senate. Through the site they can also contact their Senator and Congressman directly as well as forward the message on to friends.

There are over 80,000 Missing American Servicemen from World War II, Korea the Cold War and Vietnam

There are over 80,000 Missing American Servicemen from World War II, Korea the Cold War and Vietnam, 25,000 of whom the Defense Department estimates are possibly recoverable. Yet we only recover 72 per year- under 1 in 1,000. For decades we have given these heroes disparate treatment, emphasizing some wars, theaters or service over others. Such prioritizing among the Missing compromises our commitment to “leave no one behind” and burdens surviving families with unnecessary delays. This year the House of Representatives began to correct this injustice in Section 561 of the National Defense Authorization Act. This bill calls on the Secretary of Defense to implement a comprehensive, coordinated, integrated, and fully resourced program to account for all of these Missing. Among the particulars are an increased in recoveries to 200 in 2015 and 350 in 2020. Tragically, the Senate did not include such language. The House and Senate are soon to decide whether to include the House’s language in the Defense Authorization bill. At a time of war it is essential that today’s service personnel and their families know that American honors its commitment to “leave no one behind”. Tell your representatives to incorporate the House’s language in the National Defense Authorization Act and insist the Defense Department implement and fully fund its requirements immediately.
