My experience with senior care in Alberta has been borderline a nightmare. It is now obvious this same nightmare is present in most provinces as well. It took a deadly virus to finally, FINALLY alert the governments at both levels, that seniors were not only neglected, they have been forgotten.
Over a decade ago, I saw such shorthanded, troubling lack of quality staff, UNDER staffing AND reporting, over medication, and abuse that I reported repeatedly to the Alberta ministers in charge of seniors. I will be a senior in need of assistance in the upcoming decade and I think suicide would be the better option to living in conditions even animals would not survive. The owners of Senior facilities are for the most part, underpaying and under supervising their facilities while they often charge for premium care. THAT has to be stopped. A realistic ratio of seniors to staff per facility along with regular evaluation of the needs of each senior that does change has to be not only be monitored, BUT meet standards which eliminates the horror stories coming from senior facilities today. Shame on both level s of governments for over a decade of neglect our seniors have had to endure. This has to stop NOW and improved change must start immediately.
