PTDS enhances safety, security in Ghazni

GHAZNI PROVINCE – 1-25-11 - Since the Precision Threat Detection System (PTDS) surveillance system went into operation over FOB Andar in November 2010, insurgents have had a challenge operating against the GoA in Ghazni Prov.

Across Ghazni Prov., the PTDS camera identified enemy tactics being used, and provided real-time surveillance needed to positively identify enemy combatants in the area. The PTDS camera system allows 3rd Bn, 187th Inf Regt to monitor insurgents, until it’s safe to kill or capture them. Also, the system can operate in any weather condition, allowing for full-time coverage even in the worst conditions. “The PTDS is extremely effective, but is not a standalone asset,” said Staff Sgt. Matthew Strausbaugh, Scout Plt Sgt. “When it's used in conjunction with our other assets, it makes it nearly impossible for the insurgents to hide from us.” The PTDS provided essential intel and surveillance on over half of the enemy fighters TF Iron Rakkasan has eliminated since mid-Nov. On Jan. 11, surveillance from the PTDS aided TF Iron in stopping 4 armed insurgents. The camera system located a group of insurgents on motorcycles, near the village of Shamshay. The TF provided the location and target description to the Attack Weapons Team, who engaged the insurgents as they drove through an open field. “Using the PTDS, the Scouts and the AH-64s from TF Gambler, eliminated another threat to the security of Ghazni Prov.,” said Lt. Col. David Fivecoat, cmdr of 3rd Bn., 187th Inf.
