Rescued Canadian Dogs Saved from “Dog Shoot” to Arrive in New York

TODAY July 27, 2010 (Port Washington, NY) -- Seven out of 36 dogs that were rescued from a “dog shoot” in Northern Canada will arrive at New York’s Republic Airport in Farmingdale on Tuesday, July 27 at 1:30 pm. North Shore Animal League America’s (NSALA) Rescue Team will greet the dogs with its 33-foot rescue vehicle, and then transport them to its Port Washington adoption headquarters. These unwanted dogs will now have a chance at finding loving, permanent homes.

IFAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare) reached out to NSALA after discovering a “dog shoot” was scheduled to control the dog population. Concerned residents alerted IFAW about the number of roaming and unwanted dogs that would soon be rounded up and shot. In many remote communities without access to regular veterinary care, this is often considered the only means of controlling the dog population. “Once we heard about the dog shoot, we immediately collaborated with a vocal minority of community members who wanted to find a humane solution for these unwanted dogs,” said IFAW’s Canadian project manager, Jan Hannah. “It is a mark of tremendous progress for the community to move from dog shooting to considering transport as a humane alternative.” IFAW worked with rescues and shelters across Eastern Canada to find homes for twenty-nine of the dogs. The remaining seven dogs will arrive at NSALA. Joanne Yohannan, SVP Operations at NSALA reflected, “The seven dogs that are being humanely relocated represent the hope for all of the roaming dogs in this area. It is an example that you do not have to shoot animals to combat an overpopulation problem.” Upon arrival at NSALA all of the dogs will be thoroughly evaluated medically, behaviorally and socially, and will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.
