California Canada Free Press reader Renee sent the late, great Rush Limbaugh rushing headlong back into our hearts today on Canadian Thanksgiving.
“I am sure y’all know whose bumper music this is, which is perfect for a tearful catharsis right now. I have never heard the words before — did not even know that there WERE words!” Renee wrote.
Here are the hauntingly beautiful lyrics of the 1984 Pretenders song, ‘My City Was Gone’ that millions of listeners heard announcing the Rush Limbaugh Radio Show for more than 30 years:
I went back to Ohio
But my city was gone
There was no train station
There was no downtown
South Howard had disappeared
All my favorite places
My city had been pulled down
Reduced to parking spaces
Ay, oh, way to go, Ohio
Well, I went back to Ohio
But my family was gone
I stood on the back porch
There was nobody home
I was stunned and amazed
My childhood memories
Slowly swirled past
Like the wind through the trees
Ay, oh, way to go, Ohio
I went back to Ohio
But my pretty countryside
Had been paved down the middle
By a government that had no pride
The farms of Ohio
Had been replaced by shopping malls
And Muzak filled the air
From Seneca to Cuyahoga Falls
Said, ay, oh, way to go, Ohio
Thank You profoundly, Renee for sending this message—not just to Canada Free Press—but to all reading Canada Free Press on this day.
To us, and them, it was the equivalent of the unforgettable el Rushbo sending us a message from above.
