Every calorie of energy expended to thwart Trump is a calorie expended that risks our annihilation

Seeing Down Through the NeverTrumpers’ Foggy Bottom

There are none so blind as those who will not see -- John Heywood, 1546, adapted from Jeremiah 5:21 Many of our Conservative brethren are so blinded by hubris they fail to recognize Conservatives have had no choice ever since Donald Trump was chosen the Republican candidate for President. There is no choice. No matter the wishes of some in our movement, there is no counterpoint option other than Hillary. Trump. Hillary. Trump. Hillary. No other options to choose from. Of course, Johnson and Steien are “options” but only insofar as choosing either will help/harm Clinton or Trump. Of course, “not voting” is an option as well, but this merely withholds support (and a needed vote) from the candidate one feels is, in the end, the least dangerous.
At best “not to decide is to decide.” There is no hiding from the harsh illumination of this truism. Ben Shapiro can attempt to maintain a submission hold upon “the true Conservative movement” and continue badmouthing Trump. Glenn Beck can persist in anti-Trump tirades of delusional word salad. The National Review can publish another NeverTrump special edition. Regardless, unavoidably, irrefutably, all these Trump detractors miss the point. The dilemma posed by Trump has nothing whatsoever to do with a conflict between one’s preference for item A vs. B, or between a regular item A vs. an idealized item A, but rather a decision about whether to vote for and support (verbal, written, etc.), a flawed man, who admittedly could be the megalomaniacal caricature he’s feared to be, vs. failing to promote this man and instead foster the election of the female version of Darth Vader. On the one hand we have a candidate who is scary. On the other hand we have another who is terrifying, likely to scorch our planet with liberal jurists, government regulations, deficits, debt, and annihilation of the First and Second Amendments. There is no choice. Even were the decision to be between the options of “bad” and “bad,” an honorable person nevertheless would be encumbered to choose one in any case. And, in choosing, the honorable person would be consequently encumbered to actively support or at least fail to undermine the candidacy of one or the other.

So, what the hell is going on with these geniuses continuing to speak out against Trump? Where is the alternative universe they seem to inhabit that offers a choice other than Trump or Hillary? Where is the universe that permits a do-over “to get it right this time” after Hillary has packed the Supreme Court and imported more than 20 million new Democrat voters? There is no such universe. We’re stuck in this one. And, in this universe, every calorie of energy expended to thwart Trump is a calorie expended that risks our annihilation (think “North Korea’s nukes can reach Chicago and Iran’s not far behind and Hillary’s at the helm”). In this universe, there is no excuse for our Conservative literati castigating or undermining Trump. And if they don’t stop doing it, those of us who believe we are Conservative may in the end have no option other than to don the white foam uniforms of George Lucas and salute the Death Star.
