Jobs for Jihadis

Someone call Marie Harf, because Holder says we're 'not at a time of war'

This week, State Department spokesperson Marie Harf made waves by claiming that we can't "kill our way out of this war" with ISIS. Since poverty is helping extremism take root in a completely-unknown-religion-that-is-totally-not-Islam, a jobs program is probably the right way to go. Once radical Muslims have a little pocket change, they'll supposedly relax. Even Chris Matthews thought this was utterly ridiculous.

"We're killing a lot of them and we're going to keep killing more of them, so are the Egyptians, so are the Jordanians. They're in this fight with us. But we cannot win this war by killing them, we cannot kill our way out of this war," Harf claimed. "We need, in the longer term, medium and longer term, to go after the root causes that lead people to join these groups, whether it's lack of opportunity for jobs."
Later, Harf would argue that Americans who doubt the viability of her "jobs for jihadis" concept are simply too dumb to understand her "nuanced" point. Now, she has a new problem. According to Attorney General Eric Holder, she has it all wrong. "We can't kill our way out of this war" because we're not in "a time of war" in the first place. As the Daily Beast reports:
Holder made the remarks Tuesday while responding to a question about the Department of Justice's prosecution of journalists over national security matters. The attorney general was making a broader point about the need for reporters to consider whether publishing sensitive information might undercut American national security. "I'll use an extreme example, perhaps unfair. In World War II, if a reporter had found out about the existence of the Manhattan Project, is that something that should have been disclosed? Now we're not at a time of war, I understand, and I said, it's an extreme example. But I think there is a question that members of the press should ask, about whether or not the disclosure of the information has a negative impact on the national security of the nation,” Holder said.
So, we're bombing people, killing people, and allegedly trying to "degrade" ISIS, while Egypt and Jordan have ramped up their attacks on the terrorist organization. But we're "not at a time of war?" Obama is asking Congress for (an admittedly limiting) war authorization, but we're "not at a time of war?" Apparently Ms. Harf made a mistake. She forgot that Obama ended the war on terror, and she failed to toe the company line on our glorious victory. We're sure she'll get an angry phone call a new set of talking points soon. The problem going forward is not that we "can't kill our way out of this war." That's pretty much the only way you ever win a war. Sadly, the real issue is that we're saddled with an administration that refuses to acknowledge that we're at war in the first place. You can't win a fight if you're not even willing to admit it exists.
