Stop The Spending!

The new Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew, is requesting yet another increase in the debt ceiling.

Lew says there is no other option. He says the United States must honor its debts and in order to do so, must borrow more money. Only in the world of public debt is this a solution. We have been debating this question for years now and so far the solutions have been bandaids. We never address the root of the problem. If, as Lew suggests, it is a given that we must honor our debts, then it would seem that the logical response to that is to stop incurring obligations. Stop approving foreign aid to all but a few countries. Stop funding private companies. Stop giving away tanks and jets. Stop trying to buy friendships. We don't (or didn't until the past few years) need to bribe other countries to like us. We have lead the world in most measurable ways. We have given to all but a few countries, supporting their wars, their rebuilding, even the restoration of their historic sites. We can't afford to fall deeper and deeper into debt.
