Fellow Veterans and Friends of Veterans: Today, the Los Angeles Times Editorial Board tried to justify the so-called federal corruption investigation and indictment of former L.A. City Councilman Mitchell Englander

"The Englander indictment" - Editorial

The Englander indictment
Los Angeles City Hall observers have been waiting more than a year to learn what, if anything, would come out of the ongoing federal corruption investigation into city officials and real estate developers.
Well, what a coincidence.  Los Angeles VA observers have been waiting for years-and-years to learn what, if anything, would come out of the ongoing, never-ending crime and corruption by federal VA officials, wealthy and powerful non-Veteran special interest groups and real estate developers. On August 26, 2013, a Federal Judgment was entered against the Secretary of the VA and the Los Angeles Executive Director adjudicating nine real estate deals on Federal VA property that were decreed: "unauthorized by law and therefore void." (unauthorized by law is unlawful and unlawful is illegal) On January 28, 2015, then VA Secretary Robert A. McDonald, a co-Defendant in the lawsuit and two of his friends representing Plaintiff Veterans -- wealthy attorneys Bobby Shriver and Ron Olson -- neither are Veterans, got behind closed doors and agreed to a conspiratorial "Settlement Agreement" that favored the illegal Defendants at the expense of the innocent Plaintiffs – disabled homeless Veterans.

As though the fraudulent and illegal wheeling and dealing with Veterans VA property and mistreatment of disabled homeless Veterans wasn't bad enough, the corruption and land-fraud continues to get worse while the homeless Veteran population continues to increase even though the self-serving negotiators promised to end Veteran homelessness in Los Angeles by the end of 2015 and beyond. Los Angeles is still our nation's capital for homeless Veterans and land-fraud is still at the forefront of this unparalleled organized crime machine. So why is the Los Angeles Editorial Board focused on supposed Los Angeles City Council real estate wheeling and dealing and not the actual crime and corruption at the Los Angeles VA? The LA Times:
Los Angeles must fundamentally change how real estate developments are approved and land-use decisions are made. It needs clear rules for officials and developers, and it needs modern land-use plans that allow developers to build housing and commercial projects to meet the city's need for homes and jobs — without having to buy their way into the council's good graces.

Consider this: Former City Councilman Mitchell Englander allegedly accepted $10,000 in cash etc., from an unknown real estate developer, while mega-millionaire real estate developer Thomas Safran did-in-fact receive a 75-year lease on a federal VA building and property valued in the mega-millions-of-dollars -- "RENT FREE". Not enough? Safran then went to the very L.A. City Council that the Times declared Los Angeles must fundamentally change how real estate developments are approved and land-use decisions are made and received $24.3 million from the L.A. City Council to rehab 59 rooms in the run-down and vacated Building 207 on Federal VA property. Following is a preliminary timeline of the Safran real estate deal, which is one of many land-fraud deals manipulated from the VA's "draft master scam" in cahoots with the fraudulent "West Los Angeles Leasing Act of 2016," orchestrated by corrupt U.S. Congressman Ted Lieu and U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.   On April 04, 2018, the Staff of "The Real Deal" reported:  Veterans Affairs seeks developer to finance, build and run massive housing project The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA is looking for a developer to build hundreds and possibly more than 1,000 units of housing at its medical center in West Los Angeles campus, a massive project that comes amid severe turbulence at the federal agency.  The DVA said it will lease the land to the principal developer for 75 years free of charge, at the north side of its West Los Angeles VA Medical Center campus. The project is part of the massive government agency's redevelopment master plan. (my underline and bold for emphasis)

On November 21, 2018, Bianca Barragan of "L.A. Curbed" wrote the following VA picks developer to put 900 homes for veterans on West LA campus
West L.A. Veterans Collective has been selected to undertake a long-awaited revamp of the sprawling Veterans Affairs campus in West Los Angeles. The collective will build at least 900 of the 1,200 supportive housing units that the VA has agreed to put on the 400-acre campus along Wilshire Boulevard.  The collective is a partnership among Century Housing Corporation, U.S. Vets, and Thomas Safran and Associates.
Less than a year later on September 19, 2019, Steven Shar of "Urbanize Los Angeles" wrote:
Thomas Safran & Associates is expected to receive $8.8 million in Measure HHH funds to convert Building 207 at the Veterans Administration Campus in Westwood into permanent supportive housing.
Not enough? On October 24, 2019, a little more than a month later, Bianca Barragan of "L.A. Curbed" wrote the following: "LA awards $24.3M for homeless housing at West LA VA campus" LA awards $24.3M for homeless housing at West LA VA campus
The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve up to $24.3 million in funding to repurpose a building on the Veterans Affairs campus in West Los Angeles for housing for veterans. That represents about 70 percent of the cost for the project, called Building 207, which will create 59 units of permanent supportive housing for homeless and chronically homeless senior veterans. Work is expected to begin in the summer of 2020, and wrap up by the end of 2021.
How is that an L.A. City Councilman purportedly accepted $10,000 in cash from a real estate developer and faces 50 years in prison, and mega-millionaire real estate developer Thomas Safran accepted $24.3 million from the entire L.A. City Council and also gets a 75-year lease "rent free" on a building on Federal VA property?

Think about this -- SERIOUSLY:  Former L.A. City Councilman Mitchell Englander allegedly accepted $10,000 from an unknown real estate developer and has been indicted for purportedly lying about it to federal officials and now faces 50 years in prison. Mega-millionaire real estate developer Thomas Safran, who is not a Veteran, did-in-fact accept $24.3 million from unanimous L.A. City Council members to rehab a building on Federal VA property and now has a lease on said building / property for 75 years – "RENT FREE."    Rest assured, there's a lot, lot more about this Safran real estate scam in addition to all the other never-ending, rampant, out-of-control crime, corruption and land-fraud at the Los Angeles VA. The aforementioned is just a basic course in "Federal Corruption Investigation 101" that the local Los Angeles U.S. Attorney's Office and FBI agents obviously failed. Moreover, why isn't the Los Angeles Times investigative team pursuing a slam-dunk Pulitzer Prize for exposing the biggest and most corrupt land-fraud swindle in the history of the United States, and why don't they want to defend homeless and hungry U.S. Military Veterans after they pledged their lives to defend the U.S. Constitution on their behalf, which includes Freedom of the Press?
