The Line in the Sand

At the beginning of the Texas War of Independence, it was crucial that the “Texians” keep Santa Anna’s Mexican army engaged at the Alamo as long as possible, so that Gen. Sam Houston could gather his revolutionary forces.

However, the defenders were vastly out-numbered, and Santa Anna had warned that he would give no quarter.  In short, holding the Alamo became a suicide mission. Recognizing this hard fact, Lt. Col. Travis, commander of the Alamo, drew a line in the sand with his saber, and asked all who would join him in making a stand to the death to step across the line.  All but one man - a French veteran named Moses Rose - stepped up, crossed the line, and voluntarily sealed their fate. Moses survived, because he went over the wall that night. The rest of the defenders died in battle. Since then, a myriad of phrases drawing from this event have become a part of our everyday vocabulary.  We refer to the ultimate, to-the-death limit as “the line in the sand”.  When someone is going beyond what can be tolerated, we say they are “crossing the line”.  When something is too much to be accepted, we say it “goes over the line”.  And when extraordinary personal sacrifice is called for, we ask people to “step up”. You see, some things ARE too much to be borne, and those things are worth dying for.  Those who display that kind of courage and commitment are the ones who become our heroes - regardless of current “revisionist” history - because at gut level, we still recognize true greatness of character. However, some people today have trouble with the idea of “limits”.  We’ve all seen the bumper sticker that reads “No Limits” - how tough and “cool” that sounds! And what an empty, meaningless slogan it really is – because there ARE limits beyond which you do not go. Whether they’re spending OUR money, kowtowing to our enemies, betraying an Oath of Office, or aborting an unborn baby, American Progressives just don’t seem to grasp that some things are too much. The problem is that Progressivism isn’t just a political ideology.  It is also a religion, with the basic premise that the State (government) is “god”, the creator and giver of all things.  And the gospel of that “god” is that all things must serve the State.  So absolute right or wrong simply don’t exist. Right is whatever furthers the Progressive agenda of establishing that all-powerful State. Wrong is anything that hinders that goal.

Like spoiled children, they refuse to accept “no” as an answer

And based on that religion, Progressive Operating Procedure is simple: if whatever they’re doing isn’t working, they simply ramp it up, and do more of the same.  Like spoiled children, they refuse to accept “no” as an answer, and if screaming doesn’t achieve the desired result, they pitch a full-blown, tear-up-the-room tantrum, expecting the additional racket and damage to get the job done. That is why there is such a great divide between Progressives and the rest of us. They do not accept that there ARE things we will not tolerate. It’s a matter of degrees. If you kick my dog, I’ll get angry, and tell you off.  I may even throw you off my property.  But if you break into my home and try to murder my family, you’ve gone too far.  You have crossed that line into the “unacceptable” area, where only one of us is going to walk away, because I will kill you to protect my family - or die myself in the effort. If you choose not to practice my religion – no problem!  However, if you try to prevent me from practicing my religion, you’re going too far. If you say things I don’t like, I may disagree, but that’s okay – that’s your Right to Freedom of Speech (and mine).  But if you try to deny me my Right to Freedom of Speech, you’re going too far. If you choose not to keep firearms to protect your loved ones, that’s fine. However, if you try to take mine away, leaving my family defenseless, you and I will have a major problem, because you’ve stepped over the line. And if you don’t like our Constitutional Republic, that’s okay – you’re free to leave it, for some dictatorship more to your taste.  But if you stay and try to destroy America, you’ve gone too far - because I will not stand idly by while you destroy my homeland, and my children’s future.  That is not to be borne. There ARE limits, and American Progressives are fast approaching that line in the sand.  For all our sakes, let’s hope they don’t cross it. Whatever their Delusions of Grandeur may be, I know I speak for a large number of Americans when I say that they will
