NOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

After meeting with His Excellency Mr. Arístides Mejía, the constitutional Vice President of Honduras on 24 September 2009, and on 28 September with His Excellency Mr. Jorge Arturo Reina Idiáquez, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of Honduras to the United Nations, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, His Excellency Dr Ali Abdussalam Treki, issued the following statement:
The President of the General Assembly recalls General Assembly Resolution 63/301 which, inter alia, “Decides to call firmly and unequivocally upon States to recognize no Government other than that of the Constitutional President, Mr. José Manuel Zelaya Rosales;” and “Expresses its firm support for the regional efforts being undertaken pursuant to Chapter VIII of the Charter of the United Nations to resolve the political crisis in Honduras”; the President of the General Assembly expresses concern over the current situation in Honduras, including the situation of the Embassy of Brazil in Tegucigalpa;
The President of the General calls for the restoration of the constitutional order in Honduras and the return of President Zelaya to power;
The President of the General Assembly urges the de facto government in Honduras to respect the inviolability of the Embassy of Brazil in Tegucigalpa according to International Law, in particular the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations, and that the safety of all individuals in its premises be safeguarded;
The President of the General Assembly joins United Nations Secretary-General H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon in calling for an agreement and urges all political actors to redouble efforts to find common ground through peaceful dialogue.
