There will come a time when I will be in a position to afford to build the house of my dreams. The costs will be split into quarters; one quarter will go to my garden, one quarter will go to my library, one quarter will go to my kitchen, leaving the last quarter to build the rest of my house. My priorities are straight – books first then food (my garden will feed me, in addition to having a top notch BBQ area).

All of this is to say that, given the choice, give me some nice steaks and a BBQ to cook them on, and I’m a happy man! (If there is a book nearby as well, life can get no better!) In fact, many of us – and not just those of us with the y chromosome – enjoy ourselves with a good piece of steak on the BBQ. And now, thanks to some research from the good folks at Kansas State University, the health benefits of eating a piece of steak has just gone up. Especially if you add a bit of rosemary to your cooking! According to the researchers, adding rosemary to your steak has been found to break up potentially cancer-causing compounds known as HCAs, or heterocyclic amines. These HCAs normally form when the meat is cooking, but adding rosemary to your cooking has been shown to reduce levels of HCA’s by 30 to 100 percent, due to the herb’s antioxidant properties. Of course, there is something to be said for not adding rosemary to a piece of steak. In these cases, go find yourself some rosemary extract, and you’ll never know it’s there, and get the same benefit. “Rosemary extracts shouldn’t have much of an aroma to them. Most people don’t want a rosemary-flavored burger. So if you get the extract you don’t really know it’s there,” food science professor, J. Scott Smith told ScienceDaily.com recently. The results of Smith’s research continues to lend credence to previous work his team has done, showing that marinating steaks in certain herbs and # also help lower the level of HCAs.
