“Trump's strong showing in South Carolina marked his second straight victory in the Republican primaries. Underscoring the electorate's frustration with Washington, he was backed by nearly 4 in 10 of those who were angry at the federal government, and a third of those who felt betrayed by politicians in the Republican Party. “The South Carolina results were also being watched closely for indications of who, if anyone, among the more mainstream candidates might emerge to challenge Trump. “Texas' Cruz was banking on a well-regarded get-out-the-vote operation and 10,000 volunteers to pull out a strong finish in South Carolina as well as in the Southern states that follow. “But his failure to stop Trump in South Carolina could puncture that strategy. Still, the Texas senator will still have more than enough money to run a long campaign. “Florida's Rubio was hoping a top-tier finish in South Carolina could help establish him as the mainstream alternative to Trump and Cruz. Many GOP leaders believe neither Trump nor Cruz could win in the general election.”
“He’s a terrific person,” Trump said of the pope, the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics. “To me it’s [about] illegal immigration. I don’t think the pope really understood in terms of the crime problem and the problems of illegal immigration.” "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian," Pope Francis said Thursday. A Vatican spokesman clarified the Pope’s remarks Friday, saying he “in no way [made] a personal attack” on the New York businessman."But most folk believe that claiming a person who considers himself a Christian is not a Christian is as personal as it gets. Hearing that the pontiff had declared Trump a non-Christian didn’t stop Evangelicals in South Carolina for getting out to vote Trump. If there was any ill will behind Pope Francis’ pronouncement that Trump is not a Christian, it was a balloon that faltered and didn’t fly, while Trump soared sky high. The Donald’s likely now wondering how you say “Woo Hoo!” in Italian.
