USTR Jamieson Greer tells the NYT Canada walked away from what he describes as the most preferential U.S. trade treatment in the world
According to Greer, the offer included:
• Auto tariffs as low as 7%
• Lower steel and aluminum tariffs
• Elimination of the 10% lumber tariff
And now Canada faces a widening trade war.
The NYT says Carney’s office declined to comment.
If Greer’s account is wrong, Ottawa should correct the record.
If it’s right, Canadians deserve to know why Carney walked away.
Release the deal.
