OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding the cancellation of the wasteful Mission Cultural Fund, the slush fund at Global Affairs that spent taxpayers’ money on a sex toy show in Germany and a photography exhibit for a rock star.
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the federal government to scrap its impending second carbon tax following today’s Parliamentary Budget Officer report.
“Canadians are already struggling to afford gasoline and groceries and the last thing we need is another carbon tax that makes life more expensive,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “The PBO is clear: the second carbon tax will cost families hundreds and even thousands of dollars.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the federal government to end the policy that allows governors general to bill taxpayers for clothes.
“The feds need to rein in the governor general’s out-of-control expenses,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “Canada’s governor general already takes a $342,100 salary every year so they can pay for their own clothes.”
CALGARY, AB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation presented its 25th annual Teddy Waste Awards to the governor general for racking up sky-high bills for airplane food; the Quebec government’s app that made people line up for hours; and, a Charlottetown councillor who built her driveway around a power pole and charged taxpayers for moving it.
The Canadian government spent thousands of dollars to fund stage productions where seniors in other countries share their sex stories in front of live audiences.
The bill totals $12,520.
Each performance features a hand-picked group of geriatrics recounting true sexual experiences, including “first time, best time, worst time, last time.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the federal government to immediately stop paying striking employees and commit to clawing back every dime.
“It’s very simple: If you’re not working, taxpayers shouldn’t be paying you,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “It’s time to turn off the taps.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on federal opposition parties to reject the $13 billion subsidy the federal government is giving Volkswagen.
“Taxpayers don’t have $13 billion to give to a multinational corporation,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “That money could be used to build more than a dozen new hospitals or lower taxes for Canadians that are struggling.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is
calling on the federal government to scrap the carbon tax following
today’s Parliamentary Budget Officer report showing the carbon tax costs
families hundreds of dollars more than they get back in
rebates.
“The PBO is clear: the carbon tax costs families hundreds of dollars
more every year than the rebates they get back,” said Franco Terrazzano,
Federal Director of the CTF. “The PBO shows politicians are using magic
math to sell their carbon tax.”
OTTAWA, ON:
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is criticizing Finance Minister
Chrystia Freeland’s budget for raising taxes and running deficits
indefinitely.
“This
budget is giving taxpayers big deficits, more money wasted on interest
charges and higher taxes,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of
the CTF. “This government doesn’t care about fiscal prudence or helping
taxpayers.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is
releasing a Leger poll showing four out of five Canadians oppose the
pay hike members of Parliament are taking on April 1. At the same time,
taxpayers are calling on Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to stop
the carbon tax and alcohol tax hikes that are also scheduled to go up
on April 1.
“MPs are taking higher pay the same day they take more money from
Canadians and that’s wrong,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director
of the CTF. “At the very least, Freeland must cancel the MP pay and tax
hikes in the budget.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is demanding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pay back the public for the cost of the $6,000 per night hotel room in London.
“Trudeau should have been upfront with taxpayers about the bill from day one,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “Struggling Canadians should have never been forced to pay for the lavish luxury hotel suite when there were less expensive options.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is
calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to respect the motion passed
in Parliament to stop the alcohol tax hike set for April 1.
“The only time members of Parliament got to vote on this tax hike,
they overwhelmingly voted against it,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal
Director of the CTF. “MPs clearly want to see the alcohol tax hike
scrapped in next Tuesday’s budget.”
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on all members of Parliament and senators to oppose today’s motion that would reject most of the Senate’s amendments on Bill C-11.
“Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won’t even listen to his own handpicked senators who are trying to make sure government bureaucrats can’t filter Canadians’ social media feeds,” said Jay Goldberg, Ontario Director of the CTF. “All MPs must show Canadians they value our freedom of expression and reject this motion.”
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the federal government to scrap its plan to increase the carbon tax, alcohol taxes and member of Parliament pay on April 1.
“The feds will make life more expensive with the April tax hikes,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shouldn’t be raising taxes when Canadians can’t afford gas or groceries.”
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is launching a legal challenge with the Office of the Information Commissioner to force the government to disclose who stayed in the $6,000-per-night luxury hotel suite during Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral.
The CTF filed an access-to-information request for documents showing who stayed in the room. But the government redacted the name of the individual in question, citing security concerns and a clause in the Access to Information Act that prohibits the release of personal information.
“As a matter of principle, the government owes taxpayers transparency,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “Taxpayers paid the bills, and we deserve to know who wasted our money staying in the $6,000-per-night hotel room.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on members of Parliament to speak out against the Union of Taxation Employees and the Public Service Alliance of Canada’s pay demands.
“When Canadians are cutting back on groceries because of inflation, MPs absolutely cannot look taxpayers in the eyes and tell them to pay for huge raises in the bureaucracy,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “Union negotiators are demanding 30 per cent pay hikes over three years and 14 per cent annually when many Canadians are relying on food banks.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is correcting the record as the federal government sends out carbon tax rebates on Jan. 15.
“The Parliamentary Budget Officer shows politicians are using magic math to sell their carbon tax,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “The PBO is clear: the carbon tax costs families hundreds of dollars more than the rebates they get back.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is sounding the alarm over a large federal alcohol tax increase that is set to take effect in 100 days.
“Ottawa’s alcohol tax bender needs to end,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is rubbing margarita salt in the wound by using high inflation to binge on higher alcohol taxes.”
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released its annual New Year’s Tax Changes report today to highlight the major tax changes in 2023.
“Tax hikes will give Canadians a hangover in the new year,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “Canadians can’t afford gas or groceries and the government is making things worse by hiking taxes.”
The report outlines the major federal and provincial tax changes slated for 2023. Federal tax hikes include:
