McGuinty Grows Public Service by 16%: Private Sector Grows by 2%

"Jobs, jobs, jobs" was a catchy refrain during the federal election of 1984. Nearly twenty-five years later the slogan may be making a comeback in Ontario. Yet, this time, thanks to Premier McGuinty, it is the public sector rather than the private sector leading job growth. This approach cannot succeed because it does not add up.

McGuinty Budget Grows a More Expensive Ontario

This week Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan issued the first budget of the McGuinty government's second consecutive mandate. Instead of a taxpayer-friendly path forward, it grows a more expensive Ontario. No one should be surprised, really. The budget merely continues the government's preference for high taxes, high spending and its opposition to meaningful tax relief.

Quarantine McGuinty for Trying to Spread Corporate Welfare Disease

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today responded to Premier McGuinty's calls for the federal government to match his corporate welfare 'Next Generation Jobs' scheme in Ontario. CTF Ontario Director, Kevin Gaudet, said, "if corporate welfare created jobs, every Ontarion would have two. Mr. McGuinty should worry about his own budget, instead of giving bad advice to Mr. Flaherty."

A Taxpayer-Friendly Path Forward for Ontario

The 2007 election platform document for the Liberal Party of Ontario was "Moving Forward Together". Too often over the past years 'moving forward' has meant 'moving spending forward'. Sadly, this has meant leaving taxpayers behind.

Ontario Cities Have Highest Property Taxes

A new report out of Edmonton shows that Toronto takes the dubious honour for having the highest property taxes in Canada. However, a few other Ontario cities place just behind it at the top of the list. Beleaguered tax-paying homeowners in Ontario have suffered from high rates for years, yet they are still facing large rate hikes this year. The Edmonton report is proof enough that municipal governments should hold the line on spending and give taxpayers a break.

Judicial Inquiry Needed for Slush Gate

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) repeated its call today for a judicial inquiry into newly released evidence that raises questions about the direct political involvement of Premier McGuinty and other members of cabinet in awarding grants through 'Slush Gate', where $32 million in grants were issued in a year-end spending spree that cost Minister Colle his job.

    Enough MPs Already Mr. McGuinty

Premier McGuinty and the other premiers will be meeting with Mr. Harper on a variety of issues. One item Mr. McGuinty is expected to raise is more MPs for Ontario. Canada needs more MPs about as much as Britney Spears needs more media attention. More politicians usually means more people thinking up new schemes to spend other peoples' money. Nevertheless, the Harper government is forced by law to add more seats to Parliament starting in 2011.

Ontario Northland and Santa Express Lose $15 million

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today called on the Ontario government to reign in losses at Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) and further demanded for the release of its annual reports for the last five years. CTF Ontario Director, Kevin Gaudet said, "Santa doesn't get government subsidies for his reindeer and taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook for these services."

Patients Sue for Private Health Insurance in Ontario

Private health insurance exists in Ontario for pets but not people. It makes little sense that as parents we can provide more timely and flexible care for our kittens than our kids. The government should move to end this inequity both to relieve the burden on the existing health care model but, more importantly, to provide patients greater choice and timeliness.

McGuinty Should Keep His Hands Off the GST Cut

Dalton McGuinty sent a strong signal this week with his new cabinet appointments that he intends to continue with his tax and spend agenda. He signalled what could amount to expensive moves by growing cabinet to 27 people, appointing a Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, creating a new cabinet committee on 'poverty', and entertaining municipal requests to increase the PST. These moves demonstrate that he is ignoring all economic indicators that the Ontario economy may be in for a rough ride.
