Nothing about America's ever-expanding welfare state has been more egregious than its unflinching cultivation of personal irresponsibility. • Police in Washington, DC were shot at by five people riding in a van. Americans will no doubt be "relieved" to know they fired at police to avoid arrest, not to deliberately target cops. The cops themselves? One suspects a more "benign" reason for thugs trying to kill them is of little comfort.

Putting Military Women's Lives on the Line

In a move that reeks of political correctness, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced Thursday that all combat positions in the U.S. military will now be open to women, with no exceptions. "They'll be allowed to drive tanks, fire mortars and lead infantry soldiers into combat," Carter declared. "They'll be able to serve as Army rangers and green berets, Navy SEALs, Marine Corps infantry, Air Force parajumpers and everything else that was previously open only to men."

TURKEY-RUSSIA TURMOIL

Leading from behind, or more accurately, failing to lead at all, has its consequences. Turkish jets shot down a Russian Su-24 fighter jet Turkey claimed was over its airspace, and both pilots were reportedly killed. In addition, American-backed Syrian rebels shot down a Russian rescue helicopter, killing one crew member. Russian guided missile cruiser Moskva will now be deployed off the Syrian coast, with Lieutenant General Sergey Rudskoi warning that "every target posing a potential threat will be destroyed," and all military contacts with Turkey "will be suspended."

Fazliddin Kurbanov: Terrorist 'Refugee'

The fecklessness of the Obama administration's despicable "refugee" agenda can be personified. Last August a federal jury convicted Uzbek refugee Fazliddin Kurbanov of three terror-related charges that included working to support a terrorist organization, and amassing explosive materials in his apartment in Boise, ID.

Kurdish Activist Takes On Turkey's Descent into Extremism

Abdullah Demirbas, Kurdish human rights activist and twice-elected former mayor of the Sur municipality in Diyarbakir, has long been targeted by Turkish authorities who apparently view him as a threat to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's determination to "re-Islamify" his nation. "I would like to emphasize that we believe in that inter-religious and intercultural dialogue a will bring communities together in this century," Demirbas told his lawyer, Ms. Irina Tsukerman, while he languished in prison.

Taking On Sanctuary City Lawlessness

The American left's contemptuous disregard for laws it doesn't like is metastasizing. Despite the public outrage that attended the murder of Kate Steinle by Juan Francsico Lopez-Sanchez, a seven-time convicted felon who had been deported five times, the number of illegal alien protection centers known as sanctuary cities has increased. The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) reports the number of these law-obstructing entities has grown to 340, compared to only 276 identified as recently as last July. CIS's analysis is based on new information released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that covers the months of January through September of 2014.

Iranian Terrorist Attack Against U.S. Revealed

A bombshell report by the Washington Times reveals that fecklessness in the face of terror isn't a condition exclusive to the Obama administration. "Bill Clinton's administration gathered enough evidence to send a top-secret communique accusing Iran of facilitating the deadly 1996 Khobar Towers terrorist bombing," the Times states, "but suppressed that information from the American public and some elements of U.S. intelligence for fear it would lead to an outcry for reprisal, according to documents and interviews."

Navy Secretary Dismisses Risks to Women in Combat

For Navy Secretary Ray Mabus it would appear that progressive ideology trumps inconvenient reality. In an interview with National Public Radio (NPR) Mabus criticized a nine month study revealing that women sustain injuries at a higher rate than their male counterparts and shoot with less accuracy under combat-simulated conditions. "(The study) started out with a fairly large component of the men thinking this is not a good idea and women will never be able to do this,” Mabus told NPR’s David Greene. “When you start out with that mindset you're almost presupposing the outcome.”
