How the American Economy Became a Sleazy Carnival Freak Show

MARC McDONALD Whatever happened to the once-mighty American economy? The United States once had the mightiest economic juggernaut of any nation in history. Our "Arsenal of Democracy" played a big role in winning World War II. During that conflict, we overwhelmed our enemies with a tidal wave of efficient industrial production of everything from bombers to jeeps to battleships.

Paying Off Overdue Debt To Polish History

Jan Maksymiuk "Katyn," a film by Polish veteran director Andrzej Wajda, may not be a masterpiece, but the film will surely embed itself in the memory of viewers. If not for its artistic message, then at least for its stunning finale -- the massacre of Polish officers by the Soviet NKVD.

An ACORN Falls from the Tree

Ken Blackwell As negotiations over Congress’s emergency rescue bill continued over the weekend, repeated rumors leaked out that the Democrats were trying to funnel money to a hyper-partisan organization involved in criminal voter fraud. I’m speaking of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now — known by its acronym, ACORN. Although ACORN was cut from the final legislation, it’s important to understand this organization and its long history with, of all people, Barack Obama. And it’s important to see how partisan this emergency legislation has become.

Second Class Status for Ontario’s Most Vulnerable in Bill 77

(Queen’s Park) – MPP Randy Hillier joined the debate this week to address continued burdens placed upon our province’s most vulnerable with the McGuinty Government’s Bill 77, Services for Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act, 2008. Hillier pointed out that with this Bill the Government adds nothing for those with disabilities, instead entrenching wait times in law and legislating warrantless entry, all while eroding privacy rights and eliminating Ministerial accountability.

Linda Gibbons Acquitted

imageLinda Gibbons has just been acquitted by a provincial court judge in Toronto on a charge of obstructing a peace officer and has walked out of court a free woman. Justice Clements rightly ruled that Gibbons's conduct of being peaceful and silent could in no way be interpreted to mean she was making any peace officer's job more difficult when she was arrested outside the Scott "Clinic" abortuary in Toronto earlier this year. The decision brings into question the whole Crown/police tactic of charging Gibbons over a 14-year period with disobeying a peace officer, when the correct and more appropriate charge is disobeying a court order. Clements suggested Gibbons WOULD have been guilty of that charge on the basis of the evidence with which he was presented ... but that charge was not laid.

STUCK IN THE ARCTIC FOR THREE WEEKS…AND COUNTING

imageFrom Peter Alexander, TODAY correspondent So, here we are. In the Arctic. Day 23. Good times! Producer Paul Manson and I, along with cameraman Callan Griffiths and soundman Ben Adam, were sent here on assignment to report on climate change and the Arctic for an upcoming broadcast. The primary news peg — and one reason for our visit — is that for only the second time in recorded history the Northwest Passage is ice free, effectively clearing this shortcut between Europe and Asia.

My Flawed Abortion Logic

In answer to a letter I received regarding my statistics on unplanned pregnancies and failed contraceptives leading to abortion, I must admit the following: The letter writer says that I used bad logic and he is right. I do apologize for misleading my readers -- I did not intend to do so. I understand that my percentages and statistics were off -- instead of 100,000 Canadian abortions it was only 97,000 or even as few as, thank goodness, 93,000 as he states. And it is true that my failed contraceptive figures were convoluted. However, the fact is that only a small percentage of pregnancies result from failed contraception so what about the rest of the pregnancies?
