100-year-old father still cheers on son, 62, at softball games

imageNORCROSS - The lone fan in the bleachers wears a plaid shirt, striped britches hiked up high and polished penny loafers - the quintessential grandpa suit. Louis Herrig came to this Norcross ballfield to watch his son play, an activity that dates back to the Eisenhower Administration. It comforts his son, Bruce Herrig, 62, to know dad, now a century old, can not only make the game, but can drive himself here. Lucky is the sexagenarian who looks over his shoulder in the on-deck circle and sees what's always been there, his father.

Afghanistan

NATO says that most of the military deaths in Afghanistan are the result of road-side bombs. What NATO doesn't say is that Canada has suffered a disproportionate number of the dead and wounded caused by these innovative explosive devices. Those who say that Canada has invested too much in Afghanistan to pull out of the combat zones there in 2011 echo Lyndon B. Johnson's reason for continuing the U.S. mission-impossible in Viet Nam.

Iraq

When Saddam Hussein was running things in Iraq he gave his fellow Sunnis (the minority) all the perks while oppressing the majority Shiites. There is very little you can be sure of in the turbulent Middle East, but you can be sure of this: The Shiites, aided and abetted by their allies in Iran, are just waiting for the U.S. to leave to embark on a pay-back-time campaign against the hated Sunnis.

No special privileges

- D.C. Wright, With Rick Chace and Jeff Head Our “leaders” have turned this whole Constitution thingy right on its head. Instead of being our (well-paid) EMPLOYEES, they have taken it upon themselves to become our RULERS. Take the Congress for example. For the most part (and there are only a tiny handful of exceptions), the laws they pass don’t apply to them or to Capitol Hill anywhere. Sexual harassment? No problem, they’re not covered by those laws. Labor laws? Not enforced here. Time to take a vacation? THEY’RE not too poor to afford to travel in style. Just call the Air Force and get a VIP aircraft for them and their minions. Call it “fact-finding” to mollify the folks back home. Why, there’s even talk of Congress buying as many as 6-8 brand new luxury corporate jets so the Air Force can fly them about in even greater comfort. $500 million tax dollars or so, but who cares? CONGRESS doesn’t have to pay for it.

President Obama labels those opposed to Obamacare “un-American.”

Perhaps those opposing it should strive to be “pro-American” as he has, by calling law enforcement officers stupid; throwing a beer party in the Nation’s most hallowed edifice; bowing to Saudi Arabia’s king; praising Marxist Daniel Ortega; insulting Special Olympians; doubling the national debt; globetrotting, apologizing for America; nationalizing automakers; endorsing rationed care determined by bureaucrats deciding who and who doesn’t get care; calling those opposing Obamacare un-American for exercising their constitutional right to dissent.

Great web site

Great web site! I am so happy for someone like you in Canada that really like the US. I am in upstate NY and a conservative , which is a rarity. I am even close to the “people’s republic of Ithaca” and that is always a challenge.

The Crisis in America

I find it very interesting that we are getting "freedom of speech" from Canada, as there is a lot effort to quell that freedom down here. I'm reminded of people in occupied France during WWII risking all to hear the "voice of America" and truth.
