Outdoor Jackets and PFCs

Outdoor Jackets and PFCs
The Greenpeace (GP) Detox Campaign to get rid of a variety of materials in textiles is in its third year. Let's dig into just one aspect of it, namely per- and poly-fluorinated compounds (PFCs for short) that are used to make water repelling or waterproof high quality outdoor gear such as rain jackets and hiking boots.

Small business rejects mandatory pension plan, supports voluntary retirement savings options

Toronto, – The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is very concerned with the provincial government’s decision to introduce enabling legislation for a mandatory Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP) today. Once in place in 2017, the ORPP will require every Ontarian without a workplace pension plan to pay up to $1,643 in mandatory pension premiums per year. Welcome to the O-zone—where economic development is a zero-sum game

Late in the day on Thanksgiving eve, when no one was paying attention, the Obama administration released its Unified Agenda—a regulatory roadmap of thousands of regulations being finalized in 2015. Within the bundle of more than 3000 regulations is a rule on ozone that President Obama himself, in 2011, “put on ice” in an effort to reduce “regulatory burdens and regulatory uncertainty, particularly as our economy continues to recover.” Regarding the 2011 decision that shocked environmental groups, the New York Times (NYT) recently stated: “At the time, Mr. Obama said the regulation would impose too severe a burden on industry and local governments at a time of economic distress.” So, why has the rule that the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) calls: “the most expensive ever imposed on industry in America,” come back? First, Obama isn’t facing an election—which, while the White House denied it, most believe to be the reason for the 2011 about-face. More importantly, however, is the fact that following the 2011 decision that struck down the proposed ozone rule, environmental groups sued the Obama administration. The resulting court order required the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to release the proposed rule by December 1, with finalization by October 2015.

Eagles or Buzzards?

I went dark years ago. Going dark means a couple of different things. Some denote a lack of presence; others denote a sense of depression. In my case I simply decided to not get involved with a bunch of hackneyed and clichéd, moronic promises from politicians expecting us to believe every bit of manure they shovel in our direction doesn’t stink and we have to appreciate the fact they’ll produce roses where cactus thrives.

Surprise, Surprise: China Rejects Emissions Pledge Review

China has rejected the scrutiny of efforts to limit carbon emissions, a key tool that the US says is necessary as more than 190 countries work to come up with a new deal to fight climate change. Chinese negotiators sought to delete provisions in a draft text that would have paved the way for other countries and non-governmental organisations to submit questions about its carbon-reduction plans, according to environmental groups that are official observers to the talks. --South China Morning Post, 8 December 2014

Protesting Law and Order

I doubt there was ever a time in America, pre-Revolution and since, that race was not an issue. It was for the framers of the Constitution who, in order to get the southern colonies to accept it, included in Article Two that, for the purpose of taxation, slaves were to be identified as only “three-fifths” of being a person. In Section 9, it was agreed that the issue of slavery was not to be addressed until 1808, but “a tax or duty may be imposed on such importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each person.”

Fat Class Warfare

Fat Class Warfare Social medicine politicizes food consumption and a globalized economy politicizes food production. And the politicized American plate has less on it and at a higher price. While the left obsessively pursues its mission of destroying fast food in the name of lowering socialized medicine costs, they are taking affordable and filling food off the shelves, as they have done with countless other products that they have targeted.

Raise half a million in campaign cash, become ambassador to Hungary

You’ll be glad to know that America’s relationship with Hungary is in good hands – well, hands anyway – as soap opera producer Colleen Bell has now been confirmed by the lame duck Democrat Senate to serve as U.S. ambassador to that country.
