The Murderer's Honor

The story of Islam is a murder mystery. It's not a murder mystery that asks who did it, but when it will end. The detective peering through his magnifying glass at a curly hair caught in the door isn't wondering who did it. He already knows who the killer is. The great mystery is how to make him stop. This isn't a story about right and wrong. In the terrains of tribe and clan that the murderers come out of, whether they are raised in a village with two goats and a well or a mansion overlooking a major city; Right is power and Wrong is not having power.

Natural Gas: How Much Can We Ask Of “The Bridge Fuel”?

Thanks to hydraulic fracturing and anti-coal regulations, low cost and abundant natural gas is displacing coal in the electric generation sector and many have argued that it should replace diesel used by heavy duty trucks in the transportation sector. The low cost of natural gas coupled with regulatory favoritism currently makes natural gas the nation’s fuel of choice. But just how far can this natural gas renaissance take the nation in replacing coal as a utility fuel and petroleum for use in heavy trucks? Let’s take a look.

Rebirth of Liberty in Democratic Rhode Island?

From unconstitutional municipal codes to behind-the-scenes political maneuvering, combined with a statehouse sending its citizens and public integrity to the outhouse, heavily liberal-statist Rhode Island may not be immune to the conservative backlash sweeping the nation, and even the world, despite eighty years of Democratic dominance.

Union of Socialist Souls Revealed

As much as modern American labor unions would like to obscure their origins to imply they were part of the struggle for American independence, the facts are contrary to their rhetoric. Modern organized labor grew out of communist theory developed in the 1840s, which itself evolved from the bloody French Revolution of 1789.

CNN's Don Lemon: Maybe a black hole sucked up that plane

We haven't covered the plane from Malaysia very much here, and honestly, the reason is that neither of us is enough of an expert on avionics to feel we can add much of value to what you see everywhere else in the news. The plane is gone. No one knows where it is. We're interested in the story but our insight is no better than the media who are already on top of it.

Solar and Wind Power Losing Worldwide Support

In his state of the union speech in January President Obama claimed that the U.S. was closer to “energy independence” than ever. He was referring to solar energy while ignoring that his administration has been the most anti-fossil fuel energy than any previous one. The U.S. has the greatest energy reserves, coal, oil and natural gas, of any nation in the world, but Obama has been waging a “war on coal”, delaying the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada, and slow to issue permits to explore for new sources of energy reserves on federal lands. The impact on the economy is incalculable, but it is driving up the cost of energy for everyone and every industry. Meanwhile, Obama keeps talking about “green jobs” and doubling the nation’s supply of renewable energy in the next three years.” This another fantasy to which he clings.

Political Islam on the Defensive

Notwithstanding the initial successes scored by political Islam with the uprising in the Middle East, the politically-oriented Sunni movements in the Arab world, be they the veteran Muslim Brotherhood or newer groups, have been put on the defensive. From Tunisia to the Persian Gulf, Arab regimes and societies are showing resilience and determination as they confront the attempt to impose a radical Islamic interpretation on their way of life. If there is any kind of common denominator among the anti-clerical protests it is represented by Saudi Arabia, intent on preventing unrest, neutralizing threats, stabilizing regimes, and, to the extent possible, trying to influence Islamists in the Gulf and elsewhere.

Suburban Detroit teacher contract gives hiring preference to non-Christians

Quite a find yesterday by Michigan Capitol Confidential, which is a publication of the free-market Mackinac Center for Public Policy. In Ferndale, Michigan, which is directly north of Detroit, the contract between the school district and the teachers union contains a clause that gives hiring preference to members of certain groups - mostly ethnic minorities. But the Ferndale school officials and their union have an interesting way of defining a minority, and if you're a Christian, you might want to look elsewhere for a teaching job:

EU Crisis Summit Poised For Energy Policy Changes

European leaders will seek ways to cut their multi-billion-dollar dependence on Russian gas at talks in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, while stopping short of severing energy ties with Moscow for now. EU officials said the current Ukraine crisis had convinced many in Europe that Russia was no longer reliable and the political will to end its supply dominance had never been greater. “Everyone recognises a major change of pace is needed on the part of the European Union,” one EU official said on condition of anonymity. As alternatives to imported gas, the Brussels talks will debate the European Union’s “indigenous supplies”, which include renewable energy and shale gas. --Barbara Lewis, Reuters, 19 March 2014
