A day seared into our souls

I am watching the 9/11 Memorial Service this morning. The tears are flowing for those families who lost so much that morning and for a country that has lost much as well. On that terrible day we were one, we were resolute, we were angry and proud and passionate. It was a day seared into our souls. It was a day when we had no doubt that we would return full measure.

I wonder, will we ever be those people again? Will we ever stand so proud? Will we ever hold hands from sea to sea in unity of purpose? Will we ever set aside everything else to protect our country? Will we ever feel the swell of pride that we felt as we watched President Bush -- from the first whispered information to the opening pitch of the ball game? No matter your politics, no matter your thoughts on the Bush Presidency, none can deny the incredible leadership during that time. That is not something you can learn, it is a gift. People, if we do not unite now, this minute, with the goal of restoring our country to its place as a beacon of hope, a voice for democracy, a world leader, we will be lost forever. We need to be those people of Sept. 11, 2001 once more. Shirley Reynolds
