The National Citizens Coalition is pleased to announce that Bill C-377 has been voted on and passed by the Senate.
"This is landmark legislation that we have supported for several years," says Peter Coleman, President and CEO of the National Citizens Coalition. "The passage of Bill C-377 marks a major victory for our supporters, but it is also an important step in the right direction for transparency and accountability in Canada." Bill C-377 will compel union groups and labour organizations to publicly disclose their financial behaviour. This Bill had already been passed by the House of Commons in its final form last year, yet it was held up for several months by procedural delays and lobbying efforts in the Senate. "Union transparency legislation is supported by nearly 90% of Canadians, including union members," continues Coleman. "So why are Canada's union bosses still trying so hard to lobby against it?" Canada's lax labour reporting laws have allowed union groups to funnel millions of dollars to controversial political causes, in many cases without even consulting the union membership. "Remember, these same union bosses are desperate to maintain their cushy privileges and their complete lack of oversight," adds Coleman. "Now they are finally going to be accountable to taxpayers, and that is a good thing for all Canadians."
