Cuba Rejects Free Press Call, Release Of Prisoners

GENEVA: Cuban officials have strongly rejected calls to release political prisoners and allow a free press on the Communist-run island.

Western countries such as Israel, Britain and Canada say Cuba should repeal laws that restrict freedom of expression. They have also urged Havana to free dissidents imprisoned for campaigning against the government. The recommendations are contained in a 31-page report published Monday by the U.N.
